Dodgers’ Miguel Rojas Shares Family’s Harrowing Experience During Venezuela Earthquakes

Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Miguel Rojas has spoken publicly about the terrifying ordeal his family endured during the powerful earthquakes that struck his native Venezuela, describing himself as “really lucky” that his loved ones survived while so many others were not as fortunate.

Family Was in Caracas When the Earthquakes Hit

According to Rojas, his wife, Mariana, and their two children were in Caracas to complete passport and citizenship paperwork when two powerful earthquakes—measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude—struck the country on June 24.

While Rojas was with the Dodgers during their road trip, his family experienced the violent shaking firsthand. He said the building they were staying in remained standing long enough for everyone to evacuate safely down the stairwell.

Buildings Collapsed Just Blocks Away

Although his immediate family escaped without physical injuries, Rojas revealed that the destruction was frighteningly close.

“Literally two blocks away from where my family was, two buildings collapsed,” he said, adding that he feels incredibly fortunate his loved ones are still alive. He also noted that some members of his extended family lost homes or suffered property damage during the disaster.

Thinking Beyond His Own Family

Despite his relief, Rojas said it has been difficult to celebrate his family’s safety while so many Venezuelans continue to suffer.

“I feel selfish saying everything is okay, because everything being OK with my family doesn’t mean everything is OK with the country,” he said. “We’re going through really tough moments right now.”

The veteran infielder added that several former teammates and friends have lost relatives in the tragedy, making the emotional toll even heavier.

Dodgers Honor Venezuela

Before their game against the San Diego Padres, players from both teams wore special caps featuring the letters “VZ” in honor of the victims of the earthquakes and to show solidarity with the people of Venezuela.

Rojas said he hopes the gesture helps draw international attention to the country’s ongoing humanitarian needs and the long recovery that lies ahead.

Recovery Efforts Continue

The devastating earthquakes caused widespread destruction across parts of Venezuela, collapsing buildings, damaging infrastructure, and leaving thousands of families affected. Rescue crews continue searching for survivors while communities begin the difficult process of rebuilding.

As Venezuela mourns the lives lost and supports those displaced, Rojas has asked fans around the world to keep the country and its people in their thoughts and prayers.
