Miracle on the East River! Seaplane with 8 Passengers Plunges into Choppy NYC Waters in Heart-Stopping Crash – All Rescued Safely in Daring Heroic Operation as Plane Partially Sinks
New York City’s iconic East River delivered another jaw-dropping drama on Sunday afternoon – but this time, it ended with an uplifting story of quick thinking, heroic response, and incredible good fortune that has everyone breathing a huge sigh of relief.
Just after 12 p.m., a seaplane carrying eight passengers made a hard landing in rough waters near the Manhattan ferry and Skyport terminal at 23rd Street and FDR Drive. The aircraft partially capsized, one wing submerging beneath the waves, leaving the plane bobbing precariously in the choppy current.
What could have been a catastrophic tragedy turned into a testament to human bravery and rapid teamwork.
Eyewitness and recreational boater Dan Thys and his wife were cruising nearby in their Eastbay 43 express cruiser, hoping to catch a tall ships armada for the lingering July 4th celebrations. They suddenly found themselves at the center of a real-life rescue mission.
“We were the closest vessel next to the plane, so we went right over,” Thys told The Post. “One of the pilots was standing on one of the floats… He was a little shaken. The first thing that ran through our mind is ‘how can we help?’”
The couple immediately offered life jackets and assistance as the pilot stood vulnerable on the floating wing. Moments later, the NYPD rescue boat arrived on scene, took over passenger extraction, and coordinated with the FDNY to pull everyone to safety. At least five other vessels and another seaplane also rushed in to support the effort.
All eight passengers were rescued without serious harm – two were evaluated for minor injuries – and the plane was later uprighted and towed safely back to the docks.
Photos from the scene capture the tension and triumph: the seaplane tilted dramatically in the water with one wing submerged, rescuers swarming in action, and passengers being carefully helped aboard emergency boats amid the bustling harbor.
Thys reflected on the surreal experience: “It’s an unusual experience. I hope it won’t happen again. I read that there are two people who were injured. I don’t know what the injuries are, but I hope everybody’s OK.”
This marks the second seaplane incident in the East River in less than a month, following a similar rescue near the Throggs Neck Bridge where a wave struck during takeoff.
Yet today’s outcome feels nothing short of miraculous.
In a city famous for its resilience and rapid response, the swift actions of everyday heroes like Dan Thys, combined with the professionalism of NYPD and FDNY teams, turned potential disaster into a powerful reminder of how quickly things can go right when people pull together.
As investigations begin into exactly what caused the hard landing and attempted takeoff/landing in the opposite direction, New Yorkers are once again celebrating the human spirit that defines the city – the willingness to jump in and help when it matters most.
From the choppy waters of the East River to the grateful smiles of eight rescued passengers, this is one summer story that will be told for years: the day a seaplane crash became a story of courage, quick response, and happy endings in the heart of New York.
Thankfully, everyone is safe – and that’s the headline we all needed today
