Miracle Over Manhattan: Seaplane Plunges into Choppy East River with 8 Passengers on Board – Hero Boaters & FDNY/NYPD Save Everyone in Daring Rescue as Plane Partially Sinks Near Ferry Terminal!
New Yorkers witnessed yet another heart-stopping moment on the iconic East River Sunday afternoon – but this time, the story ends with pure relief, incredible heroism, and a powerful reminder of the city’s unbreakable spirit.
Just after noon on July 5, a seaplane carrying eight passengers made a hard, dramatic landing in rough waters near the Manhattan ferry and Skyport terminal at 23rd Street and FDR Drive. The aircraft partially capsized, one wing disappearing beneath the waves, leaving the plane bobbing dangerously in the choppy current.
For a terrifying few moments, it looked like disaster had struck in the middle of the busy harbor.
But what happened next was nothing short of miraculous.
Recreational boater Dan Thys and his wife, out cruising in their Eastbay 43 express cruiser to enjoy the lingering July 4th tall ships celebrations, were the first on scene.
“We were the closest vessel next to the plane, so we went right over,” Thys recalled. “One of the pilots was standing on one of the floats… He was a little shaken. The first thing that ran through our mind is ‘how can we help?’”
Without hesitation, the couple rushed in, offering life jackets and immediate assistance as the pilot stood precariously on the floating wing. Seconds later, the NYPD rescue boat roared in, took control of the evacuation, and worked seamlessly with the FDNY to pull every single passenger to safety.
All eight people were rescued with only two suffering minor injuries that required evaluation. The plane was later uprighted and towed safely back to the docks as emergency teams swarmed the area.
Photos from the scene capture the intense drama and triumphant rescue: the tilted seaplane with its wing submerged in the gray waters, rescuers in action, passengers being carefully helped aboard boats, and the pilot visibly shaken but alive on the float.
Thys, reflecting on the chaotic but successful response, said: “It’s an unusual experience. I hope it won’t happen again… I hope everybody’s OK.”
This marks the second seaplane incident in the East River in under a month, but today’s outcome could not have been better – thanks to everyday heroes stepping up, professional first responders moving with lightning speed, and a little bit of New York luck.
In a city that never sleeps and never stops surprising, this river rescue stands out as a beautiful example of community, courage, and quick thinking turning potential tragedy into a story of hope and gratitude.
