The Little Hockey Warrior Who United a Nation: Remembering Sweet Mavrik

Do you remember sweet Mavrik?

He was the little hockey warrior with the brightest smile — the boy so many people rallied around, cheered for, prayed for, and loved from near and far. For many, Mavrik was more than a child facing an unimaginable battle. He became a symbol of courage, hope, and the beautiful way a community can come together when one small life touches thousands of hearts.

Mavrik Turnbull was only three years old, from Prince George, British Columbia. Just after his second birthday, what first seemed like a normal childhood illness became something much more serious. His family soon learned that he had Stage 4 high-risk neuroblastoma, a severe form of childhood cancer. From that moment on, hospitals, treatments, medical flights, and long days of uncertainty became part of his young life.

But Mavrik was never defined by the illness he faced.

He was a little boy who loved hockey. He loved the energy, the teams, the players, the sticks, the pucks, and the joy that came with the game. And somehow, through that love, he brought the hockey world together in a way few people ever could.

As his story spread, people from across Canada — and beyond — began sending love. Fans, families, players, and teams reached out. Support came from the hockey community in many forms, including special visits, heartfelt messages, and the unforgettable effort to send Mavrik an NHL puck from every NHL city. Public posts also showed hockey fans sending pucks and support to let “Mister Mavrik” know how deeply loved he was.

Several well-known hockey figures and NHL players were reported to have reached out or visited Mavrik, including Connor Bedard, Fraser Minten, Macklin Celebrini, Jansen Harkins, and others. The Vancouver Canucks’ mascot Fin also helped bring joy to Mavrik and his family during an incredibly difficult time.

To his family, those moments meant everything.

After nearly two years of fighting, Mavrik was moved to Canuck Place Children’s Hospice in Vancouver, where his family focused on comfort, love, and creating precious memories together. His father, Derek Turnbull, shared how overwhelming the support had been, saying the kindness from Prince George, Vancouver, the province, and beyond felt almost like the whole world had come together for their little boy.

And last night, the news no one wanted to hear came.

Sweet Mavrik gained his angel wings.

The hockey world is now mourning the loss of a three-year-old boy who passed away after his courageous battle with Stage 4 high-risk neuroblastoma.

It is impossible to measure the impact of a child like Mavrik in years. His life was short, but his light reached farther than anyone could have imagined. He reminded strangers to care. He reminded athletes why small gestures matter. He reminded families to hold each other closer. And he reminded the hockey world that the strongest warriors do not always wear jerseys — sometimes they sit in hospital beds, hold stuffed animals, smile through pain, and inspire an entire community.

Mavrik, we know you are skating through the skies now, stick in hand, surrounded by all the other hockey warriors who went before you.

Your fight mattered.
Your smile mattered.
Your story mattered.
And you will never be forgotten.

Rest easy, sweet Mavrik. The final buzzer may have sounded here, but your light will keep shining forever.
