LONDON / BLACKPOOL — A former high school teacher has been handed one of the most severe sentences available under UK law after being found guilty of murdering his 13-month-old adoptive son.

Jamie Varley, 37, received a whole-life order on 18 June 2026, meaning he will never be released from prison. His partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, was sentenced to 25 years for allowing the child’s death and related offences.

Preston Davey was born on 16 June 2022 and taken into care just five days later. After spending his early months with foster carers, he was placed with Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley in early 2023 as prospective adopters. Just over four months later, on 27 July 2023, the toddler was dead.

The case has sent shockwaves across Britain. MPs, celebrities and tens of thousands of members of the public are now demanding a full public inquiry into how the adoption was approved and why repeated warning signs were missed by the safeguarding system.

Preston’s biological parents have spoken of their “unimaginable pain.” Campaigners say the tragedy exposes deep failures in the child protection system that must never be allowed to happen again.

A child safeguarding practice review is underway, and an inquest is expected to follow. For many, however, only a full national inquiry will deliver the answers the public is demanding.
