When Jaxen entered the world, he was so tiny that he was actually smaller than an Elf on the Shelf.

His journey began long before birth. When his mother was just 21 weeks and 2 days pregnant, her water broke. In Canada, babies born before 22 weeks are generally considered below the threshold of viability, making every additional day in the womb incredibly important.

Against the odds, Jaxen held on until 23 weeks and 1 day, giving his family a precious chance to fight for his future.

After his birth, Jaxen was cared for in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), where every day became a milestone. His mother waited 30 long days before she was finally able to hold her baby for the very first time.

At that moment, Jaxen weighed just 600 grams.

For his parents, that first cuddle was more than a milestone—it was a moment they had prayed for through countless anxious days.

“The days in the NICU changed me forever,” his mother shared. “They gave every day after that a completely different perspective. I prayed constantly for his survival, for his health, and for a miracle.”

Today, one simple holiday tradition still brings those memories rushing back.

“We take our Elf on the Shelf very seriously in our home,” she said. “Every time I pick up our little Elf, I’m reminded of those days in the NICU and just how incredibly small Jaxen once was.”
