Reaching $1 billion at the box office is enough to place a movie among Hollywood’s biggest commercial successes. Crossing $2 billion is something else entirely.

As of August 2026, only seven films have broken through that extraordinary worldwide threshold, while another sits just below it at more than $1.9 billion. Together, these movies represent some of the most powerful franchises and filmmakers in modern cinema, from James Cameron’s record-setting epics to Marvel’s massive superhero events and the return of Star Wars.

The ranking is based on worldwide box office totals without adjusting for inflation, and one filmmaker dominates the very top: James Cameron has three films among the five highest-grossing movies ever. Meanwhile, Marvel claims three spots in the overall top eight.

Here are the movies that climbed higher than almost anything else ever released in theaters.

1. Avatar — $2.923 Billion

More than 15 years after its original release, 2009’s Avatar remains the movie every other blockbuster is still chasing.

Directed by James Cameron and starring Zoe Saldaña and Sam Worthington, the science-fiction epic has accumulated $2,923,710,708 worldwide. That enormous total keeps Avatar at No. 1 on the all-time global box office list as of August 2026.

Its success also began something bigger than a single record-setting film. Cameron would eventually return to the world of Avatar with another sequel that reached similarly rare financial territory.

2. Avengers: Endgame — $2.799 Billion

For a time, Marvel actually managed to overtake Avatar.

Released in 2019, Avengers: Endgame brought together an enormous collection of Marvel heroes, including characters played by Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth and Scarlett Johansson. Anthony and Joe Russo directed the superhero event, which ultimately earned $2,799,439,100 worldwide.

Its speed was almost as remarkable as its final total. The film passed $2 billion globally in only 11 days and reached $2.5 billion after 20 days. That surge temporarily pushed it past Avatar and demonstrated just how powerful the Marvel Cinematic Universe had become by the end of its first major storytelling era.

3. Avatar: The Way of Water — $2.334 Billion

Cameron proved that the original Avatar was not a one-time box office phenomenon when Avatar: The Way of Water arrived in 2022.

Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña returned for the sequel, again directed by Cameron. The movie went on to generate $2,334,484,620 worldwide, putting it comfortably inside the top three highest-grossing movies ever.

With the first and third films on the all-time list belonging to the same franchise, Avatar became one of the clearest examples of just how large an international audience a theatrical series can reach.

4. Titanic — $2.264 Billion

Long before Pandora became Cameron’s box office kingdom, Titanic had already changed the financial limits of blockbuster filmmaking.

The 1997 historical romance, led by Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, became the first movie ever to cross $1 billion at the worldwide box office. Over the years, its global total grew to $2,264,812,968.

Nearly three decades after its release, Titanic still holds the fourth position on the list. Its continued presence also gives Cameron an extraordinary three titles among the top four films in worldwide box office history.

5. Ne Zha 2 — $2.260 Billion

The most striking entry near the top did not come from Hollywood.

Ne Zha 2, the Chinese animated fantasy adventure released in January 2025, broke numerous box office records both domestically and internationally. The movie is a sequel to the 2019 original directed by Jiaozi.

Based on converted exchange rates, Ne Zha 2 earned an estimated $2,260,176,370. That placed it extraordinarily close to Titanic and made it the fifth-highest-grossing movie on the worldwide list as of August 2026.

Its position is especially notable because it stands among a ranking otherwise dominated by some of the most recognizable American film franchises of the past several decades.

6. Star Wars: The Force Awakens — $2.071 Billion

When Star Wars returned to theaters with a new generation of characters in 2015, audiences responded on a historic scale.

Directed by J.J. Abrams, Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens featured Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Adam Driver. The film became the first entry in the Star Wars franchise to reach $2 billion worldwide.

Its final global box office total reached $2,071,310,218, securing the sixth spot among the biggest movies ever released.

7. Avengers: Infinity War — $2.052 Billion

Before Endgame pushed Marvel’s box office power even further, Avengers: Infinity War had already crossed a milestone no superhero movie had previously achieved.

Released in April 2018 and directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, the third Avengers installment became the first superhero film to surpass $2 billion worldwide. Its estimated global total eventually reached $2,052,415,039.

The achievement also meant that two consecutive Avengers movies would end up among the seven films to exceed $2 billion.

8. Spider-Man: No Way Home — $1.921 Billion

Spider-Man: No Way Home is the only film in the top eight that has not crossed $2 billion, but it came remarkably close.

The 2021 MCU movie, starring Tom Holland and Zendaya and directed by Jon Watts, earned $1,921,426,073 worldwide. That made it the highest-grossing Spider-Man film at the time and placed it eighth on the all-time worldwide ranking.

Its franchise record, however, may not be permanent.

A New Generation Is Already Closing In

The all-time ranking could change again as newer blockbusters continue to post enormous numbers.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey had already earned more than $900 million worldwide just two weeks after its July 2026 release. Spider-Man: Brand New Day followed with an even more dramatic opening, bringing in $360 million in North America during its first weekend and surpassing the previous $357 million opening-weekend record held by Avengers: Endgame.

That means the list of cinema’s biggest financial giants may already have new challengers approaching.

For now, though, Avatar remains at the summit, Avengers: Endgame continues to trail closely behind, and a remarkably small group of films occupies the rare territory beyond $2 billion. From animated fantasy and historical romance to superheroes and distant worlds, these eight movies did more than sell tickets — they reached a level of global theatrical success that almost every blockbuster still hopes to match.
