Steven Schwally Sentenced to 25 Years to Life for Deadly Deer Park Nail Salon Crash

Steven Schwally, 66, of Deer Park, New York, has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the deadly 2024 crash that killed four people at a Long Island nail salon.

The sentence was handed down on August 12, 2026, following Schwally’s conviction earlier this year.

The tragedy occurred on June 28, 2024, when Schwally was driving an SUV at approximately 78 mph (126 km/h) before crashing into the Hawaii Nail & Spa in Deer Park.

The devastating collision claimed the lives of four people:

• Jian Chai Chen, the salon owner
• Yan Xu, a salon employee
• Meizi Zhang, a salon employee
• Emilia Rennhack, an off-duty NYPD officer

Nine other people were also injured in the crash.

Investigators determined that Schwally’s blood alcohol concentration was 0.17%, more than twice New York’s legal driving limit. The combination of extreme speed and alcohol turned the SUV into a deadly force as it slammed into the business.

In June 2026, a jury found Schwally guilty of four counts of second-degree murder, along with multiple additional charges stemming from the crash.

The victims’ families have spent more than two years coping with the devastating consequences of the collision. The loss of four lives, including a small-business owner, two employees, and a police officer, deeply affected the Deer Park community.

The sentence now marks a major legal milestone in the case. Schwally will face a minimum of 25 years in prison before he can become eligible for release under the sentence imposed by the court.

For the families who lost their loved ones, however, no sentence can undo what happened on that June afternoon. Their hope is that the conviction and punishment will provide some measure of accountability for a tragedy that forever changed their lives.
