Lindsay Clancy is spending her birthday in court, as her murder trial continues into its third week.

Clancy turned 36 on Tuesday, Aug. 11, the 11th day of the trial in Massachusetts Superior Court, which has been streamed live by the Associated Press. She is charged with first-degree murder in the fatal strangling deaths of her three children.

Though Clancy does not deny killing the children, her defense hinges on the argument that she was overmedicated and suffering from postpartum psychosis, and thus is not criminally responsible.

In court Tuesday, Clancy and the jury are set to hear from more prosecution witnesses, including Rebecca Jollotta, a former psychiatric nurse practitioner who treated the defendant.

Tuesday’s proceedings began with a hearing over whether the defense can add a clinical social worker, who made a TikTok criticizing a psychiatric hospital where Clancy was treated, to their witness list.

Prosecutors opposed the defense motion, whereas Clancy’s attorney Kevin Reddington argued that the social worker, Emily Thorndike, can provide relevant testimony about the quality of care at McLean Hospital, where Clancy had been admitted for several days in late December 2022, weeks before killing her children.

Thorndike worked at McLean until December 2021, about a year before Clancy was treated there.

Judge William Sullivan did not immediately rule on the motion but said he was inclined to have Thorndike be questioned in the courtroom without the jury present.

Clancy was 32 when she used exercise bands to strangle her children —Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and 8-month-old Callan —in their Duxbury, Mass., home in January 2023.

Clancy then jumped out a second-story window in an apparent suicide attempt, which left her paralyzed from the waist down.

Prosecutors claim that Clancy deliberately killed her children and that she is guilty of premeditated murder.

Because the defense is claiming a lack of criminal responsibility, Clancy would not immediately go free if acquitted. Instead, she would likely be committed to a secure state mental health facility for observation for an indefinite period of time.

Clancy’s trial has featured testimony from medical professionals, first responders and family members, including her ex-husband, Patrick Clancy.
