MELISSA CASIAS: THE AUTOPSY ANSWERED ONE QUESTION — BUT LEFT THE BIGGEST ONE UNRESOLVED

MELISSA CASIAS: THE AUTOPSY ANSWERED ONE QUESTION — BUT LEFT THE BIGGEST ONE UNRESOLVED

For almost a year, the disappearance of Melissa Casias left her family searching for answers.

Now, an autopsy has established that she suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head.

But investigators still cannot say exactly how her death should be classified.

And that uncertainty has left the case open.

 WHAT THE AUTOPSY FOUND

Casias’ remains were discovered by a hiker on May 28, 2026, in the McGaffey Ridge area of New Mexico’s Carson National Forest.

A handgun was found near the remains.

The medical investigation determined that Casias sustained a single gunshot wound to the head.

However, because her remains had undergone advanced decomposition and important forensic information was unavailable, investigators were unable to determine whether her death was a suicide, homicide or another manner of death.

The manner therefore remains undetermined.

That distinction is crucial.

Casias’ family has specifically urged the public not to turn the medical finding into a conclusion that the evidence does not support.

An undetermined ruling does not establish that another person killed her.

It also does not establish that she took her own life.

It means investigators and medical examiners do not currently have enough evidence to make that classification.

That uncertainty is now one of the central facts of the case.

 THE LAST KNOWN HOURS

Casias was reported missing on June 26, 2025, after she failed to appear for work at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Earlier that day, according to reports, she had driven her husband to work before returning home after realizing she had forgotten her work badge.

She later delivered lunch to her daughter in Taos.

Surveillance footage subsequently showed Casias walking alone along Highway 518.

Her family later discovered personal belongings left behind at home, including her keys, purse, wallet and phones. Reporting has also indicated that the phones had been reset.

Then she disappeared.

The discovery of her remains was devastating — but it also created another mystery.

Casias was found in an area where search-and-rescue teams had previously searched.

Outside reported that search teams had spent days working difficult terrain in the region after her disappearance.

Her family has said that the location where she was eventually found had previously been searched.

That raises an obvious question:

How could she remain undiscovered for so long?

The answer may involve the difficult terrain and conditions of the forest.

But investigators still have to establish exactly what happened. THE EVIDENCE STILL BEING EXAMINED

According to the family’s statement, investigators also recovered items near the scene that may be relevant to the investigation, including:

Casias’ backpack

A gun holster

A bottle of alcohol

Pieces of paper that investigators indicated could potentially be notes

Her family says additional forensic examinations are still awaited.

That means the investigation has not necessarily reached its final stage.

HER FAMILY IS ASKING FOR FACTS, NOT RUMORS

Casias’ daughters have publicly pushed back against speculation surrounding their mother’s death.

Their message is straightforward:

They want the truth — whatever that truth ultimately proves to be.

They have also asked the public and media to distinguish between confirmed evidence and theories circulating online.

That request is particularly important because the case has already attracted speculation about possible foul play and alleged connections to other scientists and national-security workers.

Authorities have not established a connection between Casias’ death and those other cases.

 THE BIGGEST QUESTION REMAINS

The autopsy has established a cause of death involving a gunshot wound.

But it has not answered the question everyone wants resolved:

Who — or what — was responsible for Melissa Casias’ death?

At this point, there is no responsible basis for declaring the case a confirmed homicide.

There is also no basis for declaring it a confirmed suicide.

The official classification remains:

MANNER OF DEATH: UNDETERMINED.

And the investigation remains active.

A WOMAN DISAPPEARED IN JUNE 2025.

HER REMAINS WERE FOUND NEARLY A YEAR LATER.

A HANDGUN WAS FOUND NEAR HER BODY.

THE AUTOPSY IDENTIFIED A FATAL GUNSHOT WOUND.

BUT THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF HER DEATH REMAIN UNRESOLVED.

For Melissa’s daughters, there may never be a simple answer.

But they are asking for something that should not be controversial:

Let the evidence speak before the speculation does.

Melissa was a mother, wife, stepmother and friend — and her family wants her remembered for the life she lived, not only for the mystery surrounding her final days.

Independent commentary based on publicly reported information. The manner of death remains undetermined, and no person is presented as responsible without confirmed evidence.
