14 HOURS HIDING IN A CAMPUS CLOSET — VSU SH//TING SUSPECT ARRESTED AFTER FIVE PEOPLE WERE WOUNDED
A 19-year-old man has been arrested after a shooting at Virginia State University left five people wounded early Saturday morning.
Police identified the suspect as Camron Harris of Henrico, Virginia. He is not a VSU student.
THE SEARCH ENDED INSIDE A DORM
The shooting happened around 1:30 a.m. near the university’s residence halls.
More than 14 hours later, authorities located Harris hiding inside a closet at Seward Hall, a residence hall on the VSU campus. He was arrested at about 4 p.m., according to authorities.
The discovery brought an end to the immediate search for the suspected shooter, but investigators are still working to establish exactly what happened.
FIVE PEOPLE WERE INJURED
Five people between the ages of 17 and 23 were wounded.
One of the victims was a 20-year-old VSU student who has since been released from the hospital.
Another victim, a 21-year-old man who does not attend the university, remained in critical condition, according to authorities.
The other victims were also reported to be non-students.
HARRIS FACES EIGHT FELONY CHARGES
Authorities obtained warrants charging Harris with:
Four counts of malicious wounding
Four counts involving use of a firearm during the commission of a felony
He is being held without bond at the Chesterfield County Jail.
Police have not announced a motive.
Investigators are also examining whether other people fired weapons during the incident and whether those actions were connected to self-defense or additional criminal conduct.
CAMPUS WAS TEMPORARILY LOCKED DOWN
The shooting occurred shortly after a university orientation event for incoming students.
A lockdown was imposed while authorities searched for the suspect. The university later lifted the lockdown after officials determined there was no ongoing threat to the campus community.
Law enforcement agencies, including the ATF, are assisting with the investigation.
WHY DID THE SHOOTING HAPPEN?
That remains one of the biggest unanswered questions.
Authorities have not yet publicly established a motive or explained the circumstances that led to the gunfire near the dormitories.
The investigation remains active, and police are asking anyone with relevant information to come forward.
