In the summer of 2007, Transformers turned giant alien robots into one of Hollywood’s biggest new franchises — and transformed the careers of its two young human leads almost as dramatically.

Shia LaBeouf arrived as a former Disney Channel star making the leap into blockbuster territory. Megan Fox, still relatively unknown to mainstream audiences, emerged from the movie as an international star. The film grossed roughly $709.7 million worldwide, establishing both actors as faces of a franchise that would dominate multiplexes for years.

Nearly two decades later, a July 2026 Entertainment Weekly retrospective again placed LaBeouf and Fox at the center of the original cast’s story: LaBeouf as anxious teenager Sam Witwicky and Fox as Mikaela Banes, the mechanically gifted classmate who becomes his girlfriend and joins him in the Autobots’ fight.

But the connection audiences watched between Sam and Mikaela apparently was not limited to the screenplay.

Years after the cameras stopped rolling, both stars acknowledged that something romantic had happened between them while making the films.

Sam and Mikaela Became the Human Heart of Transformers

Michael Bay’s movie had Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Megatron, explosions and enormous visual-effects sequences, but much of the first film was experienced through Sam.

He was an awkward teenager worried about school, his first car and impressing Mikaela before discovering that his Chevrolet Camaro was actually Bumblebee.

Mikaela initially seemed impossibly cool compared with Sam, but the movie gradually revealed her confidence around cars and her willingness to throw herself into danger. Their developing relationship gave the enormous science-fiction spectacle a recognizable teenage storyline.

LaBeouf’s nervous comic energy and Fox’s calmer presence created a contrast that helped sell the pairing. By the end of the film, Sam and Mikaela were together, and audiences would see their relationship continue in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen in 2009.

Off camera, however, questions about the actors’ relationship eventually became part of the story too.

For several years, there was no clear public confirmation from both sides about exactly what had happened.

Then LaBeouf talked.

Shia LaBeouf Broke the Silence in 2011

While promoting the third movie, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, LaBeouf gave a remarkably candid interview to Details magazine in 2011.

Asked about Fox, he acknowledged that the two had become involved while working together.

LaBeouf described the unusual circumstances created when two actors spend months together playing people who are supposed to be attracted to each other. He said he had difficulty separating work from real life in that environment and characterized the time he shared with Fox as something that belonged to the two of them.

Most tellingly, he suggested audiences could actually see their real connection in the finished movie, saying, in part, that viewers could “see the chemistry onscreen.”

His comments immediately raised another question.

Fox had been in a long-running relationship with Brian Austin Green during that era, and when LaBeouf was pressed about whether Fox and Green were together at the precise time of his involvement with her, he repeatedly said that he did not know before concluding that the situation simply “was what it was.”

That ambiguity matters. LaBeouf confirmed a romantic involvement, but his comments did not establish a precise timeline that would justify stronger claims about Fox’s relationship status.

And Fox herself had not yet publicly provided such a direct confirmation.

That would take another seven years.

Megan Fox Finally Confirmed It

In November 2018, Fox appeared on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen.

During the show’s “Plead the Fifth” segment, Cohen brought up LaBeouf’s 2011 comments and asked Fox about their relationship.

This time, the answer was unmistakable.

“I would confirm that it was romantic,” Fox said, adding that she loved LaBeouf. When Cohen characterized it as an on-set romance that did not continue afterward, Fox agreed.

More than a decade after audiences first watched Sam struggling to impress Mikaela, one of the most persistent questions surrounding the pair finally had an answer.

Their chemistry had not been entirely manufactured for the camera.

Yet whatever existed between them did not become a lasting public relationship. Instead, their shared chapter remained tied largely to the period in which they were making Transformers.

And professionally, even that partnership was about to end.

Fox Left First — Then LaBeouf Followed

Fox returned as Mikaela for Revenge of the Fallen in 2009, which became an even larger commercial success than the original.

But she did not appear in the third film.

Her departure followed a highly publicized dispute involving Michael Bay after Fox made harsh comments about the director and his behavior on set. Accounts of exactly how the separation happened differed: Fox’s representatives said in 2010 that leaving was her decision, while Bay later described her as having been fired.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley entered Dark of the Moon as Carly Spencer, Sam’s new girlfriend.

LaBeouf remained for that film, completing a three-movie run as Sam Witwicky. But in 2011, he also made clear that he was finished with the franchise, explaining that he no longer saw anywhere meaningful to take the character.

By Transformers: Age of Extinction in 2014, Mark Wahlberg had replaced him as the series’ human lead.

The Sam-and-Mikaela era was over.

Two Careers Moved in Very Different Directions

Fox’s post-Transformers career eventually became more varied than the blockbuster image that initially defined her.

Jennifer’s Body, released in 2009, later gained a strong cult following and became one of her most closely associated performances. She reunited professionally with Bay as a producer on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in 2014 and its 2016 sequel, played Reagan on New Girl, and later appeared in projects including Expend4bles and the sci-fi thriller Subservience.

LaBeouf increasingly moved away from conventional franchise stardom.

His later work included the acclaimed American Honey, the autobiographical drama Honey Boy, which he wrote, Pieces of a Woman, Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis, and David Mamet’s Henry Johnson.

It was a striking divergence from 2007, when both actors appeared to be heading together toward the center of blockbuster Hollywood.

Today, the original Transformers works partly as a time capsule. It captures LaBeouf and Fox before their careers fractured into very different shapes — and before either had publicly explained what was happening between them away from the cameras.

For years, viewers only had Sam and Mikaela.

Then LaBeouf spoke in 2011. Fox confirmed it in 2018.

And suddenly, one of the most memorable relationships in the original Transformers had an unexpected real-life chapter behind it.
