CHRIS WATTS WANTS TO MARRY AGAIN — THIS TIME FROM BEHIND PRISON WALLS
Eight years after murdering his pregnant wife and two daughters, Chris Watts is reportedly seeking marriage with a woman he met while serving his life sentence.
Fox News reports that Watts, now 41, is seeking to marry Lizzie Henderson, a 39-year-old woman who reportedly moved from Ohio to Wisconsin to be closer to him.
A NEW RELATIONSHIP BEHIND BARS
According to People, Watts and Henderson have reportedly applied to marry through the prison system.
Henderson has also reportedly sought a confidential legal name change, while People reports that she has visited Watts 23 times over a 15-month period.
The relationship has attracted intense public attention because Watts is not serving a sentence that could eventually bring him home.
HE WILL REMAIN IN PRISON
Watts is serving multiple life sentences without the possibility of parole for the 2018 murders of his pregnant wife, Shanann Watts, and their daughters, Bella and Celeste.
He initially claimed that his family had disappeared before eventually confessing to the killings.
His crimes became one of the most widely followed family murder cases in the United States.
WHY WOULD SOMEONE CHOOSE THIS LIFE?
That question has become unavoidable.
Henderson has reportedly acknowledged the seriousness of Watts’ crimes while maintaining that her relationship with him is personal.
Her decision to move closer to the prison and pursue marriage has nevertheless triggered strong reactions, including criticism from members of her own family.
For Watts, meanwhile, prison correspondence has long been a major connection to the outside world. Reports have documented his history of receiving letters from women and maintaining relationships with people he met while incarcerated.
THIS IS NOT A SECOND CHANCE AT FREEDOM
A reported marriage application does not change Watts’ sentence.
He remains incarcerated at Dodge Correctional Institution in Wisconsin, serving life without parole.
And any marriage would take place against the backdrop of the crimes that sent him there.
HE DESTROYED HIS OWN FAMILY.
HE WILL SPEND THE REST OF HIS LIFE IN PRISON.
NOW HE IS REPORTEDLY SEEKING A NEW MARRIAGE.
AND THE WOMAN WHO CHOSE TO BUILD A RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM HAS BECOME PART OF THE STORY.
The reported engagement has reopened an uncomfortable question surrounding notorious prisoners:
How does someone build a new romantic life with a person who will never leave prison?
