4-YEAR-OLD GIRL DIES AFTER BECOMING TRAPPED INSIDE HOT SUV IN UTAH
AMERICAN FORK, UTAH — A Utah family is mourning the loss of 4-year-old Rosalie “Rosie” Grace Freund after police say she became trapped inside a hot SUV parked in her family’s driveway.
Authorities have described the death as an “unimaginable tragedy.”
According to police and court documents cited by KSL, Rosie was playing with her siblings at her American Fork home on July 26 when investigators believe she entered her parents’ 2020 GMC Yukon XL.
She apparently remained inside for as long as 2½ hours as temperatures inside the vehicle climbed to an estimated 120 degrees.
A DESPERATE RESCUE
Investigators believe the SUV’s rear child-safety locks were engaged and that Rosie did not know how to open the front doors.
When she was discovered, emergency responders immediately began CPR.
She was transported to a local hospital before being flown by medical helicopter to Salt Lake City.
Court documents described her condition as extremely serious.
Despite the efforts of medical teams, Rosie died two days later.
REMEMBERING ROSIE
Rosie’s obituary remembers her as “the embodiment of joy.”
She loved spending time with her three sisters and enjoyed:
Barbies
Swimming
Singing
Bright colors
Mac and cheese
Her family described her as a child who brought happiness wherever she went.
“She brought happiness wherever she went,” her obituary states.
POLICE WILL NOT FILE CRIMINAL CHARGES
American Fork Police Lt. Ryan Archuleta said investigators do not plan to pursue criminal charges in connection with Rosie’s death.
The decision follows an investigation into how the child entered the vehicle and remained inside unnoticed.
Authorities have characterized the incident as a heartbreaking accident rather than a criminal case.
A FAMILY LEFT HEARTBROKEN
Rosie is survived by her parents and three sisters.
A fundraiser has also been established to help the family as they navigate the devastating aftermath of her death.
Her story is another heartbreaking reminder of how quickly temperatures inside a vehicle can become dangerous—even when a vehicle is parked at home.
But behind the safety warning is a little girl whose family says she brought joy, laughter and happiness into every room she entered.
Rest in peace, Rosie.
Police have said no criminal charges will be pursued. This post summarizes publicly reported information and does not imply wrongdoing by Rosie’s family.
