SOUTH CAROLINA MOTHER ACCUSED OF TRADING HER YOUNG DAUGHTERS FOR DRUGS AND MONEY
BONNEAU, SOUTH CAROLINA — A South Carolina mother is facing serious criminal charges after investigators accused her of allowing multiple men to sexually assault her two young daughters in exchange for money and illegal drugs.
Helena Nichole Hoyle, 27, was arrested Friday and charged with two counts of trafficking and child neglect, according to authorities. Her daughters are 4 and 7 years old.
The allegations emerged after the children spoke with investigators and described repeated incidents involving multiple men.
CHILDREN ALLEGEDLY DESCRIBED REPEATED ABUSE
According to investigators with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, the girls told police they had been sexually assaulted by different men on multiple occasions.
Authorities allege that Hoyle arranged for the children to be abused in exchange for money and drugs.
In at least one reported incident, investigators say Hoyle remained in the room while one of her daughters was being assaulted. She was allegedly sitting on the floor and using her phone.
The allegations are based on statements obtained during the investigation, and they have not been proven in court.
INVESTIGATORS ALSO DESCRIBED EXTREME LIVING CONDITIONS
The investigation reportedly uncovered troubling conditions inside the family’s home.
According to the children’s statements to police, the home did not have running water. They allegedly could not regularly bathe or brush their teeth and were forced to use a bucket instead of a functioning toilet.
Investigators said the children’s accounts raised concerns not only about the alleged sexual abuse but also about severe neglect and the conditions in which they were living.
POLICE SAY MULTIPLE MEN MAY HAVE BEEN INVOLVED
The allegations do not center on a single incident or one alleged perpetrator.
Investigators say the girls described encounters involving multiple unidentified men at different times.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the allegations and the identities of anyone who may have been involved.
The case could therefore expand as investigators examine the children’s accounts and gather additional evidence.
MOTHER REMAINS IN CUSTODY
Hoyle was booked into the Berkeley County Jail, where her bond was set at $250,000, according to the report.
The charges against her remain allegations. She is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Meanwhile, the investigation has placed renewed attention on the protection of vulnerable children and the warning signs surrounding severe neglect.
A CASE THAT COULD HAVE FAR-REACHING CONSEQUENCES
The allegations are especially disturbing because the victims are children who were dependent on adults for their safety and basic needs.
Investigators now face the task of determining exactly what happened, who was involved and whether additional crimes were committed.
For the two girls, however, the priority is no longer simply uncovering what happened.
It is ensuring they are safe.
A mother now faces trafficking and neglect charges, while investigators work to determine the full scope of the allegations involving her two young daughters and multiple men.
