Penn State Frat Brother Allegedly Leading Drug Ring Was Accepting Payments on Venmo and Thought Arrest Was Prank: Police

A 23-year-old who authorities say was at the center of a cocaine trafficking ring involving two fraternities at Penn State University allegedly accepted payment for the drug through his Venmo account.

According to court documents, Thomas Robinson received money for cocaine through the mobile payment service under the username “Tom-Robinson,” an informant told authorities in September 2024.

Thomas Robinson is among 14 people arrested as part of the alleged drug operation, Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday announced at a news conference Monday. Members of the Sigma Chi and Delta Upsilon fraternity houses helped cut and package the cocaine, Sunday alleged, adding that in some cases, the work was part of “indoctrination” into the fraternities.

“The packaging happened at off-campus fraternity houses and the actual drug dealing was largely from friend to friend, fraternity brother to fraternity brother, acquaintance to acquaintance and at fraternity houses and/or during parties or social engagements,” Sunday said at the news conference.

Thomas Robinson’s father, Paul Robinson, an attorney at a Pittsburgh law firm, was also among those arrested. He is accused of tampering with evidence and hindering the investigation.

According to prosecutors, Thomas Robinson, of Delta Upsilon, along with Agostino Abbatiello, a member of Sigma Chi fraternity at Penn State, were the kingpins for the operation. Between 2023 and 2024, they allegedly made regular trips to Philadelphia and New York to bring “large amounts of cocaine” to State College, Pa., Sunday said.

The cocaine was then packaged, primarily at the Delta Upsilon and Sigma Chi fraternity houses near the Penn State’s campus and distributed mainly to university students, according to the Pennsylvania attorney general’s office.

Authorities allege Thomas Robinson sold cocaine to a confidential informant several times in 2024 from the Delta Upsilon fraternity house, according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by The Centre Daily Times.

When he was arrested in December 2024, Thomas Robinson allegedly repeatedly told officers, “I’m gonna f–k you up,” according to the probable cause affidavit. He was subdued with a Taser and as he was being escorted out of the frat house, he told officers he thought he was being pranked by his frat brothers, the outlet reported shortly after his arrest.

“Investigations of this nature take time,” Sunday said. “And what we wanted to do was make sure that we took the time to arrest all of these individuals so that we could do our best to root out this criminal organization to stop it from being able to continue to deal cocaine in the future.”

Thomas Robinson and Abbatiello face charges of felony corrupt organizations, conspiracy, dealing in proceeds of unlawful activity and related offenses. Philip Masorti, who is listed in court documents as Abbatiello’s attorney, did not immediately reply to requests for comment Wednesday.

Following his arrest, Thomas Robinson allegedly cooperated with authorities.

Court records show both Robinsons posted bail. They could not immediately be reached for comment Wednesday and it was unclear whether they had legal representation.

Michael Church, the executive director of Sigma Chi International Fraternity, told The Washington Post that the organization has suspended the Penn State chapter and the three members who were charged. Delta Upsilon International Fraternity Executive Director Justin Kirk told the outlet that the suspects associated with the organization had either been expelled, suspended or resigned. Church and Kirk did not immediately reply to PEOPLE’s requests for comment.
