Hillsborough County Authorities Recover Body of Missing 5-Year-Old After Extensive Search

Missing 5-Year-Old Boy Found Dead in Retention Pond Behind Florida Apartment Complex
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office confirmed on August 7, 2026, that the body of a missing 5-year-old boy was found in a retention pond behind an apartment complex in the Northdale area of Florida.
The boy reportedly wandered away from his apartment on his own. His family contacted authorities after discovering that he was missing, prompting a large-scale search operation involving multiple law enforcement resources.

Sources said the child was autistic and non-verbal, which may have made it especially difficult for him to seek help or communicate his location.
After an extensive search, a dive team discovered the boy’s body in the retention pond located directly behind the apartment complex.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff noted that the incident marks the second time in less than two months that a 5-year-old child has drowned at the same apartment complex.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the boy’s death and how he was able to leave the apartment unnoticed.
