Nick Reiner Indicted for Parents’ Murders as Prosecutors Add “Lying in Wait” Allegation

Nick Reiner, 32, has been indicted by a Los Angeles grand jury on two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of his parents, director Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner. The indictment was unsealed on August 12, 2026.

A significant development is the addition of a “lying in wait” special circumstance. Prosecutors allege that Nick waited for or ambushed his parents before the fatal attack. If he is convicted and the allegation is upheld, the special circumstance could make him eligible for life imprisonment without parole or the death penalty. Prosecutors have not yet announced whether they will seek the death penalty.

Nick has pleaded not guilty and maintains his innocence.

During the grand jury proceedings that preceded the indictment, Rob and Michele’s other two children, Jake Reiner and Romy Reiner, reportedly testified before the grand jury.

The case also includes a separate dispute involving an estimated $1.5 million trust fund established by Nick’s parents. Nick is seeking access to the money to help pay his legal expenses, but the trustee has invoked California’s “slayer statute”, which can prevent someone accused of unlawfully killing the person who established a trust from receiving its benefits.

Nick’s criminal case is scheduled for another hearing on September 15, 2026, while the trust dispute is scheduled to be heard on October 23, 2026.

The murder allegations remain unresolved, and Nick is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
