MELISSA CASIAS: NEARLY A YEAR AFTER HER DISAPPEARANCE, AUTOPSY REVEALS HOW SHE DIED — BUT NOT WHO WAS RESPONSIBLE

For nearly a year, the disappearance of Melissa Casias, a Los Alamos National Laboratory employee from northern New Mexico, remained an agonizing mystery for her family.

Now, an autopsy has answered one devastating question — but left the most important one unresolved.

Casias died from a gunshot wound to the head, according to the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator. However, investigators have not determined whether her death was self-inflicted or whether another person was responsible.

The official manner of death has therefore been classified as “undetermined.”

REMAINS FOUND DEEP IN THE MOUNTAINS

Casias disappeared from Ranchos de Taos in June 2025.

Nearly a year later, on May 28, 2026, a hiker discovered human remains in a mountainous area of McGaffey Ridge in Carson National Forest.

According to the autopsy report, Casias’ remains were found leaning against a stone, with a firearm nearby.

Because of the advanced decomposition and the limited information available about the circumstances surrounding her death, forensic pathologist Dr. Audra Kerwin concluded that the manner of death could not be determined.

The autopsy found that a bullet entered the lower right side of Casias’ skull, traveled upward from right to left and exited through the left side.

No bullet or bullet fragments were recovered.

 THE DAY MELISSA DISAPPEARED

Casias was reported missing after she failed to appear for work at Los Alamos National Laboratory on June 26, 2025.

According to her family, Melissa had driven her husband to work that morning before returning home because she had forgotten her security badge.

She later went into downtown Taos to drop off lunch for her daughter.

But sometime afterward, something changed.

That afternoon, her daughter reportedly discovered Melissa’s keys, purse, wallet and two cellphones inside the family’s Ranchos de Taos home.

The phones had reportedly been wiped of their data.

Melissa was later captured on residential surveillance footage walking with a backpack.

Those images would eventually become an important part of the investigation.

SURVEILLANCE FOOTAGE PROVIDES A CRUCIAL CLUE

According to a statement from Melissa’s daughters, investigators obtained video from two separate locations on the day she disappeared.

Police reportedly confirmed that the woman shown in both recordings was Melissa.

The footage allegedly showed her leaving on her own and walking along Highway 518, wearing the same clothing she was ultimately found wearing nearly a year later.

That detail provides investigators with an important piece of the timeline.

But it still does not answer what happened after she disappeared from view.

 WHAT WAS FOUND NEAR HER REMAINS?

Melissa’s backpack was found near her body.

Her family says investigators also discovered a gun holster inside the backpack.

A bottle of alcohol was reportedly found in the vicinity, along with pieces of paper that investigators indicated could potentially have been notes.

The family says some of the evidence has undergone additional forensic examination and that they are still waiting for answers from investigators.

Those items may become significant as authorities continue examining the circumstances surrounding Melissa’s death.

However, their presence alone does not establish what happened.

 “UNDETERMINED” DOES NOT MEAN THE CASE IS SOLVED

The word “undetermined” is particularly important.

It does not mean investigators concluded that Melissa took her own life.

It also does not mean investigators determined that someone else was responsible.

Instead, it reflects the limits of the available evidence.

After almost a year outdoors and in an advanced state of decomposition, investigators faced significant forensic limitations.

The evidence available today may simply not be sufficient to determine exactly how Melissa died.

 HER DAUGHTERS ASK FOR FACTS — NOT SPECULATION

Melissa’s daughter and stepdaughter, Sierra Casias and Miranda Casias, released a deeply emotional statement following the autopsy findings.

They acknowledged how difficult it is to receive an official ruling of “undetermined,” while also recognizing that the condition in which Melissa was found limited what science could establish.

The family stressed that the ruling does not identify anyone as responsible for Melissa’s death.

They also asked the media and public to avoid turning unanswered questions into accusations.

Their message was clear:

They want the truth — whatever that truth ultimately proves to be.

 A MOTHER BEFORE SHE WAS A MYSTERY

For Melissa’s family, the investigation is only one part of the story.

She was a mother.

At present, investigators cannot definitively answer those questions.

The autopsy has established the cause of death but not the manner.

The discovery of Melissa Casias’ remains finally ended one part of the family’s nightmare: they now know where she was found and how she sustained the fatal injury.

But it did not resolve the mystery surrounding her final moments.

The official finding remains “undetermined.”

And until investigators complete their remaining forensic work, the circumstances surrounding Melissa’s death remain an open question.
