More than six months after 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie vanished from her Arizona home, investigators are still searching for answers — and a series of recent developments has once again pushed the case into the national spotlight.

Nancy, the mother of Today show anchor Savannah Guthrie, was last seen at her home in Tucson’s Catalina Foothills on the night of January 31, 2026. Authorities believe she was taken from the residence in the early hours of February 1.

But despite an FBI-assisted investigation, ransom notes, surveillance footage and extensive forensic work, Nancy has not been found and no one has been arrested in connection with her disappearance.

HUMAN REMAINS FOUND — BUT POLICE SAY THEY ARE NOT LINKED TO NANCY

The latest development came this week when human remains were discovered in a desert area near West Ajo Way and South La Cholla Boulevard, roughly 15 miles from Nancy’s home.

The discovery immediately sparked questions about whether it could be connected to the missing-person investigation.

But authorities moved quickly to clarify that there is currently no indication the remains are connected to Nancy’s disappearance.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department said the remains appeared to have been at the location for an extended period. The remains are being investigated separately.

For Nancy’s family and those following the case, the discovery therefore brought attention — but not the breakthrough they have been waiting for.

 INVESTIGATORS BELIEVE NANCY WAS ABDUCTED

Authorities have repeatedly said they believe Nancy was taken against her will.

The official timeline indicates that she returned home after having dinner with family on January 31.

Investigators believe she was abducted sometime during the early morning hours of February 1.

Her doorbell camera disconnected at approximately 1:47 a.m., while camera software later detected a person around 2:12 a.m. However, investigators have explained that some video footage was unavailable because of how the camera’s storage system operated.

Nancy’s pacemaker application also disconnected from her phone at approximately 2:28 a.m.

Those timestamps have become important pieces of the investigation.

THE MYSTERY FIGURE AT HER FRONT DOOR

Surveillance footage recovered during the investigation showed a person outside Nancy’s home.

Authorities have released images of a masked individual believed to have been involved in the incident.

Investigators have also examined footage suggesting the person may have approached the property before the day Nancy disappeared.

That possibility has raised a chilling question:

Was someone watching the house before Nancy was taken?

Investigators have not publicly established the person’s identity or motive.

 TWO RANSOM NOTES DEEPEN THE MYSTERY

Another extraordinary element of the case is the appearance of ransom notes.

Investigators released two notes sent to Tucson media outlets that they considered potentially credible.

One demanded money.

Another reportedly claimed that Nancy had died after being taken and said she had been buried in nature.

Authorities previously disclosed that hair found inside Nancy’s home did not produce a link to a known suspect.

Sheriff Chris Nanos has said laboratories across the country are working together to analyze DNA evidence and determine whether it can provide a meaningful lead.

The investigation therefore remains active rather than being classified as a cold case.

 THE INVESTIGATION ITSELF HAS COME UNDER SCRUTINY
