Louisiana Girl Dies From Rare Brain-Eating Amoeba Infection One Day After 8th Birthday

Lillian Smart, an 8-year-old girl from Ruston, Louisiana, has died after being believed to have contracted a rare and devastating infection caused by Naegleria fowleri, commonly known as the “brain-eating amoeba.”

Louisiana health officials said the infection was likely linked to swimming in Lake Claiborne. Lillian died on Saturday, August 22, 2026, just one day after celebrating her eighth birthday.

Her family said she suffered severe brain damage as a result of the infection.

The condition, known as primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), is an extremely rare infection that attacks the brain and has a very high fatality rate.

Naegleria fowleri typically enters the body when contaminated water goes up the nose. It does not normally cause infection when swallowed.

Lillian’s death has left her family and the Ruston community mourning a young girl whose life was tragically cut short just days after her eighth birthday.
