KAROLINE HEINTZ CASE: TEEN BOYFRIEND AND HIS MOTHER FACE CHARGES

The death of 18-year-old Karoline Heintz, a promising college soccer player in Pennsylvania, has led to criminal charges against her boyfriend and his mother.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, Royce Moser, 18, is charged with criminal homicide, while his mother, Rachel Moser, 56, faces charges related to allegedly helping conceal evidence after Karoline was killed.

HOW INVESTIGATORS FOUND KAROLINE

Karoline had been with family on the evening of August 19 and was expected to return to her campus at PennWest California.

When she failed to arrive and could not be reached, her family tracked an AirTag connected to her vehicle to a parking area near the California Borough Library.

Police arrived shortly after midnight and found noticeable signs of a serious incident inside and outside the Jeep Cherokee. Karoline was found in the rear hatch area.

WHAT POLICE SAY HAPPENED

Investigators allege Karoline met Royce outside his father’s home in North Strabane Township to discuss their relationship.

According to the criminal complaint, Royce became angry, went inside the house and returned with a large kitchen knife. Police allege he then attacked Karoline before placing her in the rear of her Jeep.

Royce allegedly drove the Jeep to his mother’s home in Beallsville.

Police say Rachel then helped her son clean the vehicle and provided him with latex gloves. Investigators further allege that she helped him clean his clothing and placed the knife in a garbage bag.

 THE ALLEGED COVER-UP

Authorities say Royce and Rachel later traveled separately to California Borough, where the Jeep was left near the library with Karoline still inside.

Surveillance footage reportedly captured Royce driving Karoline’s vehicle while his mother’s vehicle followed behind.

Afterward, investigators say the pair returned to Rachel’s home.

 A CLAIM ABOUT “DEMONS”

During interviews, Royce allegedly told investigators that he became angry and that a “demon” had taken over and told him to hurt Karoline.

The complaint also says Rachel told investigators that her son had described hearing “demons” telling him to hurt Karoline.

Those statements are part of the allegations contained in the criminal complaint and do not establish a legal defense or medical diagnosis.

 BOTH SUSPECTS REMAIN CHARGED

Royce faces charges including criminal homicide, tampering with evidence, abuse of a corpse and obstruction of justice.

Rachel faces charges including hindering apprehension, tampering with evidence, abuse of a corpse and obstruction of justice, along with related conspiracy allegations. Both were being held without bail, with preliminary hearings scheduled later this month.

Karoline was a recent Peters Township High School graduate and had committed to playing soccer at PennWest California. The university expressed condolences to her family, friends and everyone affected by her death.

A PROMISING FUTURE CUT SHORT

Karoline had just begun the next chapter of her life as a college student and athlete.

Now, investigators are working to establish exactly what happened during the final hours of her life — while prosecutors prepare a case against two people accused of playing different roles in the tragedy.

Both Royce Moser and Rachel Moser are accused, not convicted. The allegations will be tested in court.

The investigation remains ongoing.
