Cher’s renewed effort to establish a conservatorship over her son Elijah Blue Allman’s finances has taken another turn — and the disagreement is no longer simply about whether he needs help.

It is increasingly about who should be allowed to provide it.

Marieangela King Allman, Elijah’s wife, filed new papers in Los Angeles Superior Court on Aug. 18 formally opposing the conservatorship sought through Cher’s petition.

But King is not arguing that everything in her husband’s life is fine.

Instead, she is making a striking alternative request.

If a court ultimately concludes that Elijah needs someone to manage his financial affairs, King says that person should be her — not the professional fiduciary proposed through his mother’s case.

King described herself in the filing as “ready, willing, and able” to serve in that role.

That leaves two women close to Elijah presenting very different ideas about what protecting him should look like.

Cher Is Not Asking to Personally Control the Money

One important detail can easily get lost in the family conflict.

Cher’s current petition does not simply ask the court to hand her personal control of her adult son’s finances.

When she revived the conservatorship effort in April 2026, she sought a conservatorship of Elijah’s estate and proposed professional fiduciary Jason Rubin to manage his financial affairs. A temporary request was denied in April after a judge found there was not sufficient urgency at that stage, while the broader proceedings continued.

That makes King’s objection more complicated than a straightforward “wife versus mother” battle over money.

Cher’s position is that professional financial oversight is needed.

King’s position is that appointing someone chosen through Cher’s petition would undermine Elijah’s autonomy and interfere with their marriage.

And if outside control is truly necessary, King says the court should appoint her instead.

King Says She Is Willing to Take the Job

In her latest filing, King argues that she is prepared to manage her husband’s financial affairs herself.

She says an individual selected through Cher’s petition would be viewed by Elijah not as support, but as another attempt to take control away from him.

King has also pointed back to Elijah’s own previous opposition to his mother’s conservatorship efforts.

During the earlier legal battle in 2024, Elijah opposed having Cher appointed over his affairs and argued that his wife should receive priority if a conservator were ever deemed necessary.

King is now relying in part on that history as she asks the court to consider her instead.

Her position, however, is not that Elijah requires no assistance whatsoever.

In the new papers, she says she believes he needs a substantial, long-term treatment plan. Her objection centers on what she sees as the wrong kind of intervention and the wrong person being placed in authority over him.

The Marriage Has Had Its Own Complicated History

King and Elijah’s relationship has not been simple.

They have previously moved toward divorce, only to reverse course.

King has said that she filed for dissolution after becoming emotionally exhausted by problems within the marriage, including issues she attributed to Elijah’s substance use and other personal struggles.

But after Elijah entered structured treatment in New Hampshire, she reconsidered ending their marriage.

King said she dismissed her most recent divorce effort and gave up a claim involving unpaid spousal support because she wanted to support her husband and remain involved in his care.

That reconciliation has itself become part of the dispute.

Cher’s lawyers have questioned the circumstances surrounding the couple’s renewed relationship and have argued that California remains the appropriate jurisdiction for the conservatorship proceedings.

King, meanwhile, says she remains Elijah’s lawful spouse and therefore has an important legal and personal role in decisions about his future.

Elijah’s Current Situation Has Raised the Stakes

The renewed conservatorship proceedings come amid a difficult period for Elijah.

He has faced legal proceedings in New Hampshire following arrests earlier in 2026 and has been receiving treatment there. According to filings described by King, he is currently under structured institutional care while separate criminal and competency-related proceedings continue.

Cher revived her conservatorship petition after arguing that her son’s circumstances had substantially deteriorated since the family’s previous court fight.

Her filings have raised concerns about his ability to manage money safely and independently.

King does not appear to dismiss the seriousness of his situation.

Instead, she fundamentally disagrees with Cher about what should happen next.

That distinction is important because both sides can express concern for the same person while arriving at completely different conclusions about how much control should be taken away — and who should receive it.

King Says a Cher-Selected Fiduciary Could Make Things Worse

King’s strongest argument is not merely that she would make a better financial manager.

She claims that placing a fiduciary chosen through Cher’s petition in control could damage Elijah’s recovery by making him feel punished and powerless.

She has accused Cher of excluding her from discussions surrounding Elijah’s treatment and says the two sides of the family have deep unresolved trust issues.

Those allegations are King’s account and remain part of a contested family and legal dispute.

Cher’s side has maintained that the intervention is intended to protect Elijah amid serious concerns about his condition and finances.

That leaves the court with a question that is both legal and deeply personal.

If Elijah cannot fully manage his estate himself, does appointing an independent professional offer the greatest protection?

Or should his wife, who says she knows his wishes and remains committed to the marriage, be given that responsibility?

This Is Not Cher’s First Attempt

The family has been here before.

Cher originally sought a conservatorship over Elijah’s estate in late 2023 amid concerns about his substance use and financial well-being.

Elijah fought that effort, insisting at the time that he could manage his own affairs.

That earlier case did not result in Cher obtaining control.

The issue returned in 2026 after new legal and treatment-related developments in Elijah’s life prompted Cher to go back to court.

This time, however, the proposed solution involves a professional fiduciary rather than simply positioning Cher herself as the person who would manage the estate.

King’s new filing creates yet another possible outcome.

She wants the court to reject the arrangement Cher is pursuing — or, if a conservatorship is imposed, choose Elijah’s wife instead.

September 1 Is the Next Major Date

The California conservatorship matter is scheduled to return to court on September 1.

That does not necessarily mean the entire dispute will be resolved that day.

Questions involving jurisdiction, Elijah’s current circumstances, the need for a conservatorship and the identity of any potential conservator could continue to generate further litigation.

But King’s latest filing has sharpened what had already become an extraordinary family conflict.

Cher says her son’s situation requires court-supervised financial protection and has proposed a professional fiduciary.

King says her husband needs support too — but argues that putting someone selected through Cher’s petition in charge would undermine him.

And if the court believes someone must control Elijah’s financial affairs, she has made her alternative clear:

She wants the court to choose his wife.
