Guinea Landfill Collapse Kills 30 After Heavy Rain Triggers Massive Waste Slide

At least 30 people have died after a massive pile of waste collapsed at the Dar Es Salam landfill in the Gbessia district of Conakry, Guinea, burying nearby shacks and homes.

The collapse occurred at approximately 2 a.m. on Sunday, August 23, 2026, following heavy overnight rainfall. The large volume of waste reportedly gave way, sending debris into residential areas near the landfill.

According to the Guinean government, 30 people were killed in the disaster. Initial figures also reported six people seriously injured and another 16 suffering minor injuries.

Rescue teams continued searching through the debris for survivors and additional victims as authorities worked to assess the full scale of the destruction.

The tragedy has raised renewed concerns about the dangers faced by communities living near waste disposal sites, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.
