Former AC/DC drummer Chris Slade is retiring.

The Welsh drummer who formerly performed with AC/DC, David Gilmour and more has decided to permanently take a step back from drumming.

In a Facebook video shared on Saturday, Aug. 22, Slade, 79, referred to his age and a “small stroke” he had that made him change his mind.

“Hello everybody. It’s with a heavy heart that I’m announcing my retirement from drumming,” he said. “I’m near enough 80 years old. I’ve been drumming professionally since I was 16 with Tom Jones. I’ve had

good innings.”

Slade then shared his gratitude for the support he’s received over the years and thanked his band.

He then told fans to follow his Facebook page where he would post “now and again.”

“I had a stroke, as you probably know, about seven years ago,” said Slade. “A small stroke, but it’s got worse, and I’m afraid that has screwed me up.”

He added, “I’m really jealous of people like the Stones and Paul McCartney, who are going well into their eighties, and I wanted to do that, but looks like I can’t. So as I say, with a heavy heart, it’s bye for now.”

In a Facebook post last month, Slade revealed his band had to back out of their performance at the Brudstock Festival after he “fell over,” “badly” hurt his ribs and ended up in the hospital.

Slade joined AC/DC in 1989 and was featured on their comeback album The Razor’s Edge.

But by 1994, he left the group when their longtime drummer, Phil Rudd, returned. Slade rejoined in 2015 when Rudd was forced to take an extended leave of absence. Slade formed his band The Chris Slade Timeline in 2012.
