Eminem and Dolly Parton occupied two very different corners of American music, and despite decades of fame, the two stars never actually met.

But in 2022, Parton quietly reached across that divide.

After they were both inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the country legend wrote Eminem a personal letter congratulating him, praising his performance and telling him something far more unexpected: she had always felt a strange connection to him, even though they did not know each other.

Nearly four years later, after Parton died at age 80 on Aug. 25, Eminem revealed the note publicly and explained that her gesture had stayed with him.

“Getting this note from Dolly really had an impact on me,” he wrote in his tribute.

For a rapper who grew up largely immersed in an entirely different musical culture, receiving personal encouragement from Parton clearly meant more than an ordinary celebrity compliment.

Two Very Different Artists Shared the Same Night

Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Bruce Mathers III, and Parton were part of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s 2022 class.

The induction ceremony took place that November and brought together artists from across genres and generations.

Along with Eminem and Parton, the class included Lionel Richie, Duran Duran, Pat Benatar, Eurythmics and Carly Simon.

On paper, Eminem and Parton might have appeared to have little in common musically.

He became one of rap’s defining stars.

She spent decades building a career rooted in country music before expanding into pop, film, television and philanthropy.

Yet after the Hall of Fame ceremony, Parton made a point of writing to him personally.

She began by congratulating “Marshall” on his induction and complimenting his performance.

Then she admitted something that made the message particularly memorable.

Parton acknowledged that rap was not a genre she knew especially well, but she had come to understand Eminem’s stature within it. She considered him exceptional at what he did.

Parton died four days after being admitted to a Nashville-area hospital on Friday, Aug. 21.

Before her hospitalization, she had been dealing with kidney and autoimmune issues. A representative later said that Parton died following a brief battle with cancer.

She spent her final moments at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center surrounded by loved ones.

Her representatives remembered her not only for her entertainment career but for the generosity that became another defining part of her public life.

Through the Imagination Library, hundreds of millions of books were distributed, and Parton also provided funding that contributed to research behind a lifesaving vaccine used around the world.

A Letter That Revealed Another Side of Her Legacy

Parton’s relationship with Eminem was unusual precisely because there really was no conventional relationship.
