MONTANA FAMILY TRAGEDY: WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE 8 VICTIMS AND ALAN SMITH

BILLINGS, Mont. — Eight members of the same family, including four children, were killed during a Sunday dinner at a home near Billings, Montana, in a tragedy that has left relatives and the community searching for answers.

Authorities identified 44-year-old Alan Smith as the suspected perpetrator. Smith was also found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and later died, according to authorities. The investigation remains ongoing, and officials have not established a definitive motive.

A FAMILY DINNER TURNED INTO A NIGHTMARE

The family had gathered for dinner on Sunday, Aug. 23, when Smith reportedly arrived at the home.

According to family members, Smith had previously lived with his parents but had recently been asked to move out. Relatives have pointed to that conflict as a possible factor investigators are examining, but authorities have not officially confirmed it as the motive.

Police received the first emergency call shortly after 6 p.m.

Responding officers heard sounds of gunfire coming from behind the residence. Soon afterward, the home became engulfed in flames, making the investigation and recovery effort significantly more difficult.

FOUR GENERATIONS WERE AMONG THE VICTIMS

The victims ranged in age from a young child to a woman in her 90s.

They included Smith’s parents, Dana and Barb Smith, his grandmother Evelyn Smith, and his sister Megan Ghekiere.

Four children were also among those killed:

The victims represented four generations of the same extended family, according to relatives who spoke with The Associated Press.

CHARLOTTE’S 911 CALL

One of the most heartbreaking details to emerge has involved 12-year-old Charlotte Ghekiere.

Family friends said Charlotte called 911 during the incident in an attempt to get help for her family.

Her courage has led relatives and members of the community to remember her as a hero.

Authorities have said the emergency call came while the situation was unfolding, with gunfire reportedly audible as officers responded.

THE HOME WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES

When police arrived, the residence was rapidly becoming engulfed in fire.

Smith was later found outside the home with what authorities described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He subsequently died.

The destruction left investigators facing a difficult crime scene. Detectives have been carefully searching through the remains of the home for evidence that could establish the precise sequence of events.

Investigators are also working to determine exactly how the fire started and whether it was deliberately set.

FAMILY MEMBERS DESCRIBED SMITH AS RECLUSIVE

Brad Ireland, the former husband of Megan Ghekiere and father of Owen and Chloe, described Smith as a reclusive person who spent much of his time alone.

THE SURVIVING FAMILY IS LEFT WITH QUESTIONS

Megan’s husband, Adam Ghekiere, was working when the tragedy occurred.

He reportedly learned about the emergency through dispatch communications and rushed toward the home, only to discover that the residence was burning.

He later learned that his wife and children were among those who had been killed.

The loss has devastated multiple branches of the family at once.

Community members have organized memorials and fundraisers to help surviving relatives with funeral expenses and other needs.
