MOTHER OF A66 CRASH VICTIM MAKES EMOTIONAL TRIBUTE REQUEST

MIDDLESBROUGH, England — The mother of Makai Saddington, one of five young men killed in the devastating A66 collision, has made an emotional appeal for mourners to come together and remember her son.

Saddington, 18, died alongside Michael Robert Cahill, Theo Rae, Cole Robert Worthy and Jacob Matusiak when the Volkswagen Passat they were traveling in collided head-on with a marked police vehicle on the A66 on Aug. 22. PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough also lost their lives in the crash.

A MOTHER’S HEARTFELT REQUEST

Saddington’s family is now preparing to say goodbye as tributes continue to gather for the victims.

His mother has urged those attending to come together respectfully and remember her son for the person he was and the life he lived.

The appeal comes after an earlier vigil near the crash site drew criticism over some of the behavior surrounding the gathering. Hundreds attended the event, with reports of balloons and other tributes, while some residents expressed concern about inappropriate conduct.

SEVEN LIVES WERE LOST

The Aug. 22 collision claimed seven lives in total.

The five occupants of the Passat — Saddington, Cahill, Rae, Worthy and Matusiak — were killed, as were Cleveland Police officers Blades, 37, and Clough, 38.

Police said the Passat had been traveling against the flow of traffic when it collided with the officers’ vehicle, which was traveling in the correct direction. The officers were not part of the original pursuit.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct is investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.

TRIBUTES CONTINUE ACROSS THE COMMUNITY

Tributes have poured in for both the police officers and the five young men.

A fundraiser established for the families of PC Blades and PC Clough has now passed £1 million, reflecting the scale of public support for the two officers’ families.
