A66 CRASH VICTIM’S MOTHER MAKES EMOTIONAL REQUEST FOR FINAL SEND-OFF

MIDDLESBROUGH, England — The mother of one of the five young men who died in the devastating A66 crash has made an emotional appeal for friends and supporters to come together and give her son a memorable farewell.

The request comes days after a controversial gathering near the crash site sparked criticism over the way some mourners commemorated one of the victims. Hundreds had gathered in South Bank, where balloons were released and flares and fireworks were set off in memory of 23-year-old Jakub Matusiak.

A MOTHER WANTS HER SON REMEMBERED

Matusiak’s mother has now urged those who knew her son to attend another tribute, emphasizing that the gathering should focus on remembering him and celebrating his life.

The appeal comes as emotions remain high across the community following the crash, which claimed seven lives.

The other young men who died were Cole Robert Worthy, 17; Theo Rae, 17; Makai Saddington, 18; and Michael Robert Cahill, 23, according to Cleveland Police.

THE CRASH THAT SHOCKED THE COMMUNITY

The tragedy happened in the early hours of August 22, when a Volkswagen Passat traveling in the wrong direction on the A66 collided with a marked police vehicle.

Two Cleveland Police officers, PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38, also died in the collision.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct is investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, while Cleveland Police are conducting a wider investigation into events leading up to it.

EARLIER TRIBUTE SPARKED BACKLASH

The previous memorial for Matusiak attracted significant attention after a large crowd gathered close to the crash scene.

Reports said the event included masked bikers, flares, fireworks and a balloon release. Some local residents and politicians criticized the atmosphere as inappropriate given that two police officers had also lost their lives.

The controversy has left the community divided over how the young men involved in the crash should be remembered.

The emotional tributes are unfolding alongside a major police investigation.

Cleveland Police have arrested 12 people in connection with events leading up to the crash, with some arrests relating to suspected organized crime, firearms and drug offenses. Authorities have stressed that the investigation remains ongoing.

Meanwhile, more than £1 million has been raised for the families of PC Blades and PC Clough, reflecting the widespread public support for the two officers and their loved ones.
