MONTANA FAMILY MASSACRE: EIGHT RELATIVES KILLED DURING SUNDAY DINNER

BILLINGS, Mont. — What was supposed to be a family dinner turned into a devastating scene of violence when eight members of the same family, including four children, were killed at a home near Billings, Montana.

The victims spanned four generations, from a woman in her 90s to a 7-year-old girl. The suspected gunman, identified by family members as 44-year-old Alan Smith, also died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Authorities have not publicly established a motive.

EIGHT FAMILY MEMBERS WERE KILLED

Family members identified the victims as Evelyn Smith, Dana Smith, Barb Smith, Megan Ghekiere, Owen Ireland, Chloe Ireland, Landon Ghekiere and Charlotte Ghekiere.

The children were 13-year-old Owen, 7-year-old Chloe, 15-year-old Landon and 12-year-old Charlotte.

The killings devastated a family that had gathered for an evening meal. Relatives said the Sunday dinner was unusual because their regular family gathering normally took place on Fridays.

Among those killed were Smith’s parents and grandmother, as well as his sister and four children.

CHARLOTTE TRIED TO SAVE HER FAMILY

One of the most heartbreaking details to emerge involves 12-year-old Charlotte Ghekiere.

According to family friend Jennifer Mercer, Charlotte called 911 as the shooting unfolded and tried to get help for her relatives.

Mercer described the seventh-grader as a hero and said the family wanted people to know about her final attempt to protect those around her.

Charlotte was remembered as funny and adventurous. She was preparing to begin seventh grade and reportedly loved exploring outdoors and searching beneath rocks for bugs.

LANDON WAS LOOKING TOWARD HIS FUTURE

Charlotte’s older brother Landon Ghekiere, 15, was also killed.

A memorial fundraiser described him as a protective big brother who was preparing to start his sophomore year. He was also looking forward to an important milestone — eventually getting his driver’s license.

The details have made the loss particularly painful for relatives who were watching the children grow into their futures.

FATHER ARRIVED TO FIND THE HOUSE BURNING

Megan Ghekiere’s husband, Adam Ghekiere, was working when the emergency unfolded.

As an airport rescue firefighter, he heard reports of an active shooting over a dispatch radio. He tried calling his family before racing toward the residence.

When he arrived, the house was burning.

Only later did he learn that his wife and children were among those killed.

The scene was further complicated by the intense fire, which engulfed the residence and made the recovery of victims and the investigation more difficult.

POLICE HEARD GUNSHOTS

Billings police responded shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday following reports of violence at the residence.

Officers reported hearing gunshots coming from behind the home.

The residence soon became engulfed in flames. Authorities ultimately confirmed that eight victims had been found inside, while another person — identified as the suspected shooter — died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Investigators are continuing to reconstruct what happened inside the home and what led to the shooting.

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE SUSPECT

Family members told The Associated Press that Smith had been living with his parents for years.

Brad Ireland, the father of Owen and Chloe, described Smith as a “hermit” who spent much of his time alone on his computer.

Relatives also said Smith had reportedly been asked to move out of the home only weeks before the killings.

However, authorities have not publicly confirmed that this was the motive or explained what triggered the violence.

That question remains at the center of the investigation.

FOUR GENERATIONS GONE

The scale of the loss has left surviving relatives mourning multiple family members simultaneously.

One evening brought together four generations of a family — and ended with eight of them dead.

Fundraisers have since been created to help surviving relatives cover funeral expenses, counseling and other costs.

For those left behind, the tragedy is no longer simply a crime scene. It is the loss of parents, siblings, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and children all at once.

A family dinner that should have been an ordinary Sunday gathering instead became a devastating act of violence.
