7-Year-Old Illinois Boy Suffers Anaphylactic Shock After Contact With Pokeweed

A 7-year-old boy from Pike County, Illinois, suffered a severe allergic reaction after coming into contact with a poisonous plant while helping his family clear weeds from their backyard.

Rayden Vollrath was reportedly pulling up a plant with purple berries known as pokeweed when sap from the plant got onto his hands and underneath his fingernails.

Rayden later touched his face, after which he developed swelling in his face and hands, a burning sensation, and difficulty breathing. His condition eventually progressed to anaphylactic shock, requiring emergency medical treatment.

He was hospitalized for two days before doctors determined that he had experienced an allergic reaction to pokeweed.

After Rayden was discharged, his family was provided with an EpiPen and several medications to help manage the risk of another severe allergic reaction.

The incident serves as a reminder that seemingly ordinary plants found in residential yards can pose serious health risks, particularly when their sap or other parts come into contact with the skin or are accidentally ingested.
