BODY FOUND DURING SEARCH FOR MISSING BRITISH TOURIST, 28, IN REMOTE PYRENEES MOUNTAINS
ANDORRA — A search for a missing 28-year-old British tourist has ended in tragedy after authorities recovered a body in a remote mountainous area of Andorra.
The man had been reported missing after leaving a hostel in Escaldes-Engordany in the early hours of Sunday. He had checked into the property for a three-night stay but never returned.
When he failed to come back by Wednesday morning, hostel staff alerted authorities.
HIS BELONGINGS WERE LEFT BEHIND
Investigators said the tourist had left his backpack, travel documents and other belongings at the hostel.
He had also missed a bus he had booked for midday Tuesday, adding to concerns about his whereabouts.
Local reports indicated that the man may have had reduced mobility on the right side of his body, a detail that became significant as rescuers searched the rugged terrain.
SEARCH TEAMS DEPLOYED HELICOPTER AND DRONE
Andorran police, firefighters and mountain rescue teams launched an extensive search after his disappearance was reported.
A helicopter and drone were used to scan the mountainous terrain while investigators worked to reconstruct the route the tourist may have taken after leaving the hostel.
The search eventually focused on the Tristaina Lakes area, a remote region of the Pyrenees known for its high-altitude glacial lakes and popular hiking routes.
BODY DISCOVERED IN THE TRISTAINA AREA
On Thursday around midday, firefighters located a lifeless body in the Tristaina area.
Authorities said a member of the public had contacted the rescue service after apparently seeing someone who appeared to be deceased.
Police cautioned that the body still had to be formally identified to confirm whether it was the missing British tourist.
The discovery came just one day after the official search operation began.
INVESTIGATION CONTINUES
Andorran authorities said officers from public security, the judicial police and criminal investigation units had been involved in the response.
Investigators are now expected to determine the identity of the deceased person and establish the circumstances surrounding the death.
At this stage, authorities have not publicly announced a cause of death.
The rugged environment around the Tristaina Lakes can present significant challenges for hikers, particularly in remote areas where steep terrain and limited access can make rescue operations difficult.
A TRAGIC END TO THE SEARCH
For the missing tourist’s loved ones, the discovery brings an end to days of uncertainty but raises painful questions about what happened after he left the hostel.
A journey that began as a visit to the mountainous country of Andorra has ended with a major search operation and the discovery of a body high in the Pyrenees.
Authorities are now working to formally identify the man and determine how he came to be in the remote mountain area.
