Canadian Mom Gets Keyboard Tattoo to Help Non-Verbal Son Communicate

A mother in Fredericton, New Brunswick, has gone viral after getting a keyboard tattoo on her forearm to help her autistic, non-verbal son communicate when his electronic device is unavailable.

Jessica Fletcher said her 11-year-old son, Hunter, relies on an AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) device to express himself. During an outing, however, the device’s battery died, leaving Hunter without his usual way to communicate.

Rather than give up, Hunter improvised. He drew a keyboard on a napkin and used it to point out letters and communicate with his mother.

The experience inspired Jessica to create a permanent backup. She had a QWERTY keyboard tattooed on her forearm, along with a smiley face, a sad face, and an “I ❤️ you” button.

The tattoo was designed to give Hunter another way to communicate if his AAC device ever stopped working.

According to Jessica, the first word Hunter spelled using the tattoo was “Mama.”

Jessica later shared their story on social media, where the heartfelt gesture quickly attracted widespread attention and went viral.

For the family, the tattoo represents more than an unusual piece of body art—it is a practical communication tool and a deeply personal expression of a mother’s commitment to making sure her son always has a way to be heard.
