Rescued Puppy Overcomes Neglect and Becomes a Police K-9 Protecting Pensacola
A puppy who was once rescued from a neglectful situation has now begun an extraordinary new chapter as a police K-9 serving and protecting the community of Pensacola.

K-9 Redden, whose name means “to rescue” or “to save” in Dutch, joined the Pensacola Police Department in August 2025. He was one of several Belgian Malinois puppies who needed new homes after reportedly experiencing neglect.

After being taken in, Redden began an intensive year-long police training program. His journey recently reached a major milestone when he became dual certified in detection and apprehension, officially preparing him for duty.

Redden is now assigned to the Patrol Division and works alongside his handler, Officer Michael Potts. Together, they will assist officers in locating suspects and performing scent-based detection tasks.

For the department, Redden’s story carries a special meaning. The same puppy who once needed someone to rescue him is now being trained to help save others.

“Just as we rescued him, we hope throughout his career he is utilized to save others,” the Pensacola Police Department shared when announcing that Redden had completed his training.

His journey has also been closely followed by the Emerald Shores Humane Society, the rescue organization that first took in Redden and his siblings.

The organization celebrated his achievement, saying it was humbled that one of the puppies in its care had been chosen to serve. It also praised everyone involved in selecting and training him.

From a neglected puppy in need of a safe home to a highly trained police K-9, Redden’s transformation is a powerful reminder of how a second chance can lead to an entirely new purpose. Now, he has a new mission—and a community to protect.
