Family Holds Memorial for Michael Cahill After Fatal A66 Crash Amid Controversy

The family of Michael Robert Cahill, 23, held a memorial for him following the deadly A66 crash near Middlesbrough that claimed seven lives, including two police officers.

Cahill was one of five people traveling in a Volkswagen Passat who died in the collision on August 22, 2026. The crash also killed PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough.

Ahead of the memorial, Cahill’s mother, Kelly Cahill, called on friends and relatives to gather at a site in Peterlee, County Durham. She asked attendees to bring “bikes, jeeps, cars, and quads,” saying she wanted to give her son the “send-off he deserves.”

The planned gathering followed an earlier memorial event that attracted controversy among some local residents. That event reportedly featured balloons, motorcycles, off-road vehicles, and flares, with some people criticizing the gathering as chaotic and saying it showed insufficient respect for the two police officers who also lost their lives.

A subsequent memorial for Cahill went ahead, but reports that vehicles were set on fire and damage was caused to the area added further controversy surrounding the event.

The A66 crash has left multiple families grieving, while the competing reactions to the memorials have generated debate within the local community over how public tributes should be conducted following such a devastating tragedy.
