BILLINGS, MONT. — A quiet Sunday family dinner turned into a devastating tragedy after 44-year-old Alan Smith allegedly killed eight members of his own family inside a Billings-area home — just weeks after his parents had reportedly asked him to move out.

The victims represented four generations of the same family, ranging in age from a 7-year-old girl to a 92-year-old great-grandmother.

Now, as investigators sift through the burned remains of the home, surviving relatives are speaking about troubling warning signs they say had appeared long before the tragedy.

According to family members, those concerns were not enough to prevent what happened.

A FAMILY DINNER ENDS IN HORROR

The tragedy unfolded Sunday evening, Aug. 23, as members of the family gathered for their regular dinner at the home of Dana and Barbara Smith near Billings.

Alan Smith, their 44-year-old son, had previously lived in the residence.

But relatives told investigators and reporters that he had been asked to move out several weeks before the incident.

Brad Ireland, the former brother-in-law of Smith and the father of two of the children killed, said the family had noticed troubling behavior.

“There were many red flags,” Ireland told the Associated Press.

He described Smith as a “hermit” who spent much of his time on a computer and had struggled to maintain employment.

Yet on Sunday, Smith returned to the home.

A 12-YEAR-OLD GIRL MADE THE CALL

One of the most heartbreaking details to emerge is the role of 12-year-old Charlotte Ghekiere.

As the situation unfolded, Charlotte managed to call 911.

Family friends have described the young girl as a hero for attempting to get help for her family.

“She tried to save her family,” neighbor and family friend Jennifer Mercer told the AP.

That emergency call alerted authorities to the unfolding crisis.

But by the time officers arrived, the situation had become even more devastating.

POLICE ARRIVED TO GUNFIRE AND FLAMES

Officers responding to a report of a family disturbance heard gunfire coming from behind the residence, according to Billings police.

Then smoke began pouring from the house.

Within minutes, the home was fully engulfed in flames.

Authorities later found Smith outside the residence.

Police said he had suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

The fire added another layer of difficulty to an already complex investigation.

Investigators are now working through the charred remains of the property in an effort to reconstruct exactly what happened.

WHY WAS SMITH ASKED TO LEAVE?

According to surviving relatives, Smith had lived with his parents for years before they asked him to move out.

Yellowstone County Sheriff Kent O’Donnell acknowledged that reality.

According to the New York Post, she had made plans with her longtime friend Kelsey Garland only hours before the tragedy, including plans to attend a performance of The Nutcracker in Seattle.

Garland described Megan as kind-hearted and a wonderful mother.

Those ordinary plans have now become a painful reminder of how suddenly the family’s lives were shattered.

FOUR CHILDREN ARE AMONG THE VICTIMS

The loss of the children has been especially devastating.

Owen, 13, was described by his father as a protective older brother.
