8-Year-Old Louisiana Girl Dies After Suspected Brain-Eating Amoeba Infection From Lake Swim

An 8-year-old Louisiana girl has died after contracting a rare and devastating infection caused by Naegleria fowleri, commonly known as the “brain-eating amoeba.”

The girl, Lillian Smart, was from Ruston, Louisiana. She died over the weekend of August 22–23, 2026, after the infection caused severe damage to her brain.

The Louisiana Department of Health said Lillian likely became infected while swimming in Lake Claiborne, a freshwater lake in northern Louisiana.

The infection, known as primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), is extremely rare but is almost always fatal. Naegleria fowleri typically enters the body when contaminated freshwater passes through the nose, allowing the organism to travel to the brain. It is not generally contracted by swallowing contaminated water.

Lillian’s death has brought renewed attention to the risks associated with swimming in warm freshwater during the summer months. Health officials continue to emphasize caution around freshwater environments where the amoeba may be present.

For Lillian’s family and community, the loss of the young girl has been devastating as they mourn her sudden death from an exceptionally rare infection.
