FAMILY SUES FRANKLIN SPORTS AFTER 6-YEAR-OLD GIRL DIES IN HORRIFIC BADMINTON ACCIDENT

A family is suing Franklin Sports after their 6-year-old daughter died following a freak badminton accident during a family vacation in Maine.

Lucy Morgan was just six years old when a badminton racket being used by her older brother suddenly broke apart, sending part of the racket toward her.

The incident happened on June 1, 2024, at a rental cottage in Limerick, Maine.

Lucy was watching her siblings play when the racket’s metal shaft and head allegedly separated from the handle.

The metal portion struck Lucy in the head and penetrated her skull, according to the lawsuit.

A FAMILY VACATION TURNED INTO A NIGHTMARE

Emergency crews rushed Lucy to a hospital before she was airlifted to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Doctors performed emergency surgery in an attempt to save her.

But four days after the accident, Lucy died from her injuries.

Maine State Police described the incident as unintentional.

Now, more than two years later, Lucy’s family is seeking accountability through a wrongful-death and product-liability lawsuit filed in York County Superior Court.

THE FAMILY’S ALLEGATIONS

The lawsuit alleges that the Franklin Sports badminton racket was defective and unreasonably dangerous.

According to the complaint, the handle and metal stem were not adequately secured, the adhesive connecting the components was allegedly defective and the racket lacked a secondary safety restraint that could have prevented the metal portion from becoming a dangerous projectile if the connection failed.

The family also alleges that Franklin Sports failed to provide adequate warnings about the possibility of the racket separating during ordinary use.

Those are allegations contained in the lawsuit and have not been proven in court.

HER SIBLINGS SAW WHAT HAPPENED

According to the family’s attorneys, Lucy’s siblings witnessed the accident.

Her parents reportedly heard her screams and immediately rushed to help.

The lawsuit says the emotional impact extended beyond Lucy’s parents, with her siblings also seeking damages related to the trauma they allegedly experienced.

The family is seeking damages that may include funeral expenses, emotional distress and other losses allowed under Maine law.

THE COMPANY RESPONDS

Franklin Sports has expressed sympathy for Lucy’s family but has declined to comment on the specific allegations because the lawsuit is pending.

The company said it takes product safety concerns seriously and is reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The case will now move through the legal process.

What was supposed to be a simple family vacation became a devastating tragedy in a matter of seconds.
