HeeHaw, a one-year-old donkey raised by his owner Hannah Israel from just one hour old, was involved in a tragic encounter with a Cedartown police officer during an overnight search for a missing child in Georgia.

Israel has repeatedly described HeeHaw as exceptionally friendly and completely comfortable around people. She said he had been raised inside her home, participated in petting zoos and had a habit of approaching people rather than avoiding them.

But according to the account given to Israel, officers believed HeeHaw’s behavior had become a threat.

Israel said she was told officers attempted to use a Taser after HeeHaw ran toward them while braying. The encounter then escalated, ending with the young donkey being fatally wounded.

Cedartown Police Chief Jamie Newsom has confirmed that body-camera video exists and that he personally viewed it. However, he has declined to describe what the recording shows while the Georgia Department of Agriculture Law Enforcement Division investigates the incident.

“He was my kid,” she said, explaining that she bottle-raised HeeHaw from infancy and believed she would eventually raise her own children around him.
