OPERATION STATEWIDE SHIELD: FLORIDA’S HISTORIC SWEEP FINDS 163 MISSING CHILDREN IN FIVE DAYS

In the largest operation of its kind in Florida’s history, state, local, and federal authorities have recovered 163 missing children—ranging in age from a 2-month-old infant to a 17-year-old teenager—during a high-intensity, five-day initiative dubbed Operation Statewide Shield.

Led by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) alongside Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, the unprecedented multi-agency sweep was built around seven central regional hubs, spanning Pensacola, Tallahassee, Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa, Fort Myers, and Miami.

• Tampa Bay: 46 children

• Miami: 41 children

• Jacksonville: 32 children

• Orlando: 21 children

• Fort Myers: 12 children

• Pensacola: 8 children

• Tallahassee: 3 children

Reaching Beyond Florida Borders

The investigation stretched far beyond state lines. Through real-time intelligence and cross-jurisdictional coordination, missing minors tied to Florida cases were located across six other U.S. states (Alabama, California, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, and Tennessee), the territory of Puerto Rico, and 12 foreign nations—including Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Italy, Jamaica, and Mexico.

Complex Realities & Multi-Agency Care

Law enforcement officials underscored that the operation was not aimed at a single, centralized crime syndicate, but rather addressed a broad spectrum of vulnerabilities. Many of the recovered youth had endured varying degrees of abuse, neglect, human trafficking, or severe exploitation, while others were runaways escaping dangerous environments or caught in high-risk custody disputes.

Upon being located, children were immediately brought to designated recovery hubs to receive comprehensive medical care, psychological support, and social service assistance from child-welfare professionals and victim advocates.

Arrests and Ongoing Prosecutions

Multiple arrests have already been made in connection with the sweep—including charges of lewd and lascivious behavior, felony battery, and child-custody interference—with state prosecutors warning that numerous open investigations remain active and further arrests are anticipated in the coming days.
