SPENCER BOSLEY FOUND A DOG INSIDE A TRASH BAG WHILE CLEANING AN OVERGROWN PROPERTY — AND THE DISCOVERY INSPIRED A NEW MISSION

WICHITA, KAN. — Spencer Bosley has spent years transforming severely overgrown yards for free, turning neglected properties into clean, welcoming spaces while building a massive online following.

But during one recent cleanup, the Wichita lawn-care creator encountered something he said he had never experienced in five years of mowing overgrown properties.

Bosley, who runs the popular SB Mowing social media accounts, was clearing an abandoned property with a friend when they made a heartbreaking discovery: a dog had been placed inside a plastic trash bag and left in the driveway.

Bosley later described the discovery in a GoFundMe campaign he launched on Aug. 28.

“I’ve been mowing overgrown lawns for five years and I’ve never had anything like that happen,” he wrote.

ANIMAL CONTROL WAS CALLED

Animal control responded after the discovery. According to Bosley, officials checked the dog for a microchip before taking the animal away.

But even after the authorities left, Bosley said he could not stop thinking about what he had seen.

He said the experience made him question how the situation could have happened and what might have been done to prevent it.

Rather than simply move on to his next lawn, Bosley decided to turn the disturbing experience into an effort to help other animals and the families struggling to care for them.

He contacted Christy Fischer, executive director of the Wichita Animal Action League, a nonprofit organization he has worked with over the years.

Their conversation ultimately led Bosley to launch a fundraising campaign with a goal of $100,000.

A NEW MISSION FOR PETS AND THEIR FAMILIES

The Wichita Animal Action League provides a range of services designed to help pets and their owners before a crisis develops.

According to Fischer, money raised through the campaign will support community outreach programs, including pet food banks, veterinary services and spay-and-neuter programs.

The organization also operates mobile veterinary clinics in communities where access to animal care can be limited.

According to Bosley’s fundraiser, the organization distributes approximately 250,000 pounds of free pet food to Wichita families each year and helps owners obtain vaccines, medical treatment and other essential supplies.

For Bosley, the organization’s focus on helping both animals and their owners was particularly meaningful.

He emphasized that financial hardship can quickly put pets at risk when families are unable to afford food, veterinary care or unexpected medical bills.

The goal, he said, is to provide assistance before a difficult situation becomes a crisis.

BOSLEY DONATES TO THE CAMPAIGN

Bosley is personally contributing $1,000 to begin the fundraising effort.

His nonprofit organization, SB Mow It Forward, has also pledged to match the first $5,000 donated by supporters.

Bosley is now asking his enormous online audience to help support the campaign, saying even small donations can make a difference.

The initiative represents a shift from the lawn transformations that made him famous online to a broader effort focused on animal welfare and community support.

FROM CHILDHOOD LAWN MOWER TO ONLINE PHENOMENON

Bosley began mowing neighbors’ lawns in Wichita when he was just 11 years old, using equipment belonging to his father.

The childhood side job eventually grew into a landscaping business.

After graduating from Kansas State University with a degree in computer science, Bosley worked as a mobile app developer before turning his attention to online content.

Inspired by other lawn-care creators, he began searching for severely overgrown properties and offering to clean them up for free.

His then-girlfriend, who is now his wife, encouraged him to create shorter versions of his videos for TikTok.

Bosley says his first TikTok video attracted approximately 6 million views within days.

His lawn-care and pressure-washing content has since grown into a massive online platform, with Bosley saying he now reaches approximately 40 million followers across social media platforms.

TURNING A HEARTBREAKING DISCOVERY INTO ACTION

The discovery at the abandoned property clearly affected Bosley.

Instead of allowing the experience to end with one difficult cleanup, he chose to use his platform to raise awareness and support an organization working to prevent similar situations.

The Wichita Animal Action League hopes the campaign will provide resources to families before they reach a point where they can no longer care for their pets.

For Bosley, the message is simple: helping an animal often means helping the person caring for that animal, too.

He is now asking followers who are unable to donate to simply share the fundraiser.

The original lawn cleanup may have begun as another free transformation project.

But what Bosley found that day ultimately inspired something much bigger — an effort to help pets, support struggling families and prevent future crises before they happen.

The fundraising campaign remains ongoing.
