Richard O’Sullivan, the actor best known for playing Robin Tripp in the iconic sitcoms Man About the House and Robin’s Nest, has died aged 82.

The actor passed away peacefully on Friday, September 4, surrounded by his close family at Brinsworth House, the Royal Variety Charity’s care home in Twickenham.

He had lived there for the past 23 years, following a stroke that brought his acting career to an end.

FROM CHILD STAR TO BRITISH TV ICON

O’Sullivan’s career began when he was just eight years old, appearing in the 1953 film The Yellow Balloon.

He went on to build an extraordinary career across film and television, including an appearance in the 1963 epic Cleopatra alongside Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.

But it was television comedy that ultimately made him a household name.

In 1973, O’Sullivan took on the role of Robin Tripp in Man About the House, playing a young man sharing a London flat with two women.

The series became a huge success and ran for six series.

He later reprised Robin in the spin-off Robin’s Nest, further cementing his place in British comedy history.

His character would also have a lasting impact across the Atlantic — Robin Tripp helped inspire John Ritter’s Jack Tripper in the American sitcom Three’s Company.

THE STROKE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Behind the laughter, O’Sullivan’s later years were very different from the carefree image audiences remembered.

His acting career was eventually cut short by ill health.

He suffered a serious stroke in 2003 and subsequently moved into Brinsworth House, a residence providing care for retired members of the entertainment industry.

He remained there for the next 23 years.

Despite spending his final decades away from the spotlight, O’Sullivan continued to be remembered by colleagues and fans for the warmth and comic timing that had made him famous.

HIS FAMILY’S HEARTBREAKING TRIBUTE

After his death, his son James O’Sullivan paid a deeply personal tribute to his father.

He remembered Richard as someone who was just as funny and charming in private as he appeared on television — describing him as kind-hearted, good-humoured, a devoted grandfather and a wonderful father.

James also expressed his gratitude to the staff at Brinsworth House, thanking them for the love, kindness and care they had shown his father over the years.

The Royal Variety Charity also paid tribute to the actor.

Giles Cooper, its life president, described O’Sullivan as a master of effortless charm and impeccable comic timing who brought warmth and joy to millions of viewers.
