Giuliani said Mamdani’s presence would offend him, while making highly controversial claims about the mayor’s views and associations.

He has also appeared at FDNY memorial events, where he spoke about the firefighters who ran toward danger while others were trying to escape.

The controversy has now grown beyond a clash between two politicians.

A petition calling for Mamdani to stay away from the ceremony has attracted more than 100,000 signatures, while supporters argue that the memorial should bring New Yorkers together rather than exclude the city’s elected mayor.

And that leaves New York facing a deeply uncomfortable question:
