Now, new toxicology findings are shedding disturbing light on the final hours of four children whose lives ended in one of the most devastating family tragedies of 2026.

The children — Harper Harmon, 13, Hudson Harmon, 11, and 10-year-old twins Gavin and Gracelynn Harmon — had diphenhydramine, the active ingredient in Benadryl, and kratom in their systems, according to a toxicology report cited by NewsChannel 13 and reported by The Irish Sun.

Their mother, Sarah Myers, 44, and grandmother, Amy Steadman, 64, were also found dead inside the Mechanicville apartment.

Police have described the case as a murder-suicide.

THE FOUR CHILDREN WERE FOUND DAYS LATER

The tragedy came to light on June 23, 2026, when police conducted a welfare check after concerns grew that the family had not been seen.

Inside Steadman’s apartment, officers discovered the bodies of Myers, Steadman and the four children.

Police had previously said the children’s deaths were homicides, while Myers and Steadman’s deaths were ruled suicides.

The bodies had reportedly remained undiscovered for more than a week.

THE TOXICOLOGY FINDING CHANGES THE PICTURE

Early in the investigation, police suspected that medication had played a role.

Investigators later said evidence indicated that Myers and Steadman had given the children multiple medications.

The newly reported toxicology results provide a clearer picture: all four children had both diphenhydramine and kratom in their systems.

Three of the children — Harper, Hudson and Gracelynn — died from the poisoning, according to reporting based on investigators’ findings.

Gavin survived the initial poisoning attempt, authorities said, but was later fatally stabbed.

Police previously reported that the 10-year-old had defensive injuries, suggesting he may have tried to protect himself.

THEN INVESTIGATORS FOUND THE SEARCHES

As detectives reconstructed what happened, they uncovered internet searches on Steadman’s phone that raised even more questions.

Police said searches included questions about medication effects and, later, lethal stabbing locations.

Investigators also said the evidence suggested the women had been planning the children’s deaths before June 10.

According to police, when the initial poisoning did not produce the expected result quickly enough, the women allegedly discussed another option.

A message attributed to Gracelynn during the ordeal reportedly showed that the child was aware that something was seriously wrong.

The details have become among the most haunting pieces of evidence in the investigation.

A CUSTODY BATTLE WAS AT THE CENTER

Investigators believe the tragedy was connected to a bitter custody dispute involving the children’s father, Brady Harmon.

Harmon lived in Utah and had been preparing to spend an extended period with his children.

Police said Myers and Steadman appeared to believe they were protecting the children from their father.

A handwritten note recovered by investigators reportedly contained allegations against Harmon and suggested that the women believed their actions were necessary to protect the children.

But police said they found no evidence supporting the abuse allegations, and Harmon has never been charged in connection with them.

Harmon has strongly denied the allegations.

THE LAST MESSAGES ARE NOW HAUNTING THE FATHER

In the days before the children’s deaths, Harmon had been making plans for their summer visit.

According to messages he later shared publicly, he was discussing activities for the children and preparing for time he had hoped to spend with them.

Then, on June 10, Myers reportedly told him the children were sick and suggested postponing a scheduled video call.

The call never happened.

Nearly two weeks later, the children were found dead.

For Harmon, those ordinary messages have since taken on an unbearable meaning.

A COMMUNITY STILL TRYING TO UNDERSTAND

Mechanicville police have said the case was not the result of an unknown intruder or an outside attacker.

Instead, investigators believe the children were killed by people they knew and trusted.

Police Chief William Rabbitt previously rejected the idea that the killings could be described as an act of protection.

However Myers and Steadman may have justified their actions to themselves, authorities said, the four children were victims of a horrific act.

The newly reported toxicology results have added another disturbing layer to a case that had already shocked the community.
