FUNERAL DISRUPTED — FATHER OF A66 CRASH VICTIM CHARGED AFTER DISTURBANCE

THE FATHER OF 17-YEAR-OLD COLE WORTHY HAS BEEN CHARGED AFTER A DISTURBANCE AT HIS SON’S FUNERAL — AS THE A66 TRAGEDY CONTINUES TO SEND SHOCKWAVES THROUGH MIDDLESBROUGH

The funeral of 17-year-old Cole Worthy was supposed to be a day of grief, remembrance and farewell.

Instead, the service at Teesside Crematorium was disrupted by a disturbance that ended with Cole’s 39-year-old father, Gye Worthy, being charged by police.

According to Cleveland Police, officers were called to the crematorium at around 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 9, after reports of a disturbance during the service.

The funeral later resumed.

Worthy was arrested and has now been charged with common assault, a public order offence and obstructing police. He is due to appear before Teesside Magistrates’ Court on October 2.

A FAREWELL THAT TURNED CHAOTIC

Reports say the disturbance allegedly began after Worthy took exception to comments made during the funeral service.

A source close to the family said Cole’s mother, Natalie McConnell, was left “devastated and shocked” by what happened during the ceremony.

Despite the disruption, McConnell later thanked those who attended to remember her son.

In a message shared by her friend Sarah Moloney, mourners were thanked for their presence, support and memories of Cole.

“Cole was so loved,” the message said, emphasizing how many people had gathered to say goodbye to the teenager.

COLE WAS ONE OF FIVE YOUNG MEN KILLED IN THE A66 CRASH

Cole Worthy was one of five young men who died in the devastating A66 collision on August 22.

The other victims were Michael Robert Cahill, 23, Theo Rae, 17, Jakub Matusiak, 23, and Makai Saddington, 18.

The Volkswagen Passat carrying the five collided with a marked police vehicle, killing Cleveland Police officers PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38.

Police have said the five young men had links to organized crime and were attempting to flee police before the collision.

However, there is no suggestion that Gye Worthy himself has any links to organized crime, according to the report.

TENSIONS HAVE BEEN BUILDING ACROSS MIDDLESBROUGH

Cole’s funeral came as the region remained under heightened police presence following a series of tense memorials and funerals connected to the A66 tragedy.

Earlier services for other victims attracted large crowds, while some memorial events were marred by reports of dangerous driving, flares and disorder.

Authorities have since deployed around 200 additional specialist officers, including armed officers from other northern forces, as Cleveland Police works to contain escalating tensions in the area.

Police have also made multiple arrests as part of efforts to disrupt organized crime.

TWO VERY DIFFERENT FAREWELLS

The same day Cole was laid to rest, hundreds of police officers, veterans and members of the public gathered to honor PC Matthew Blades.

Blades, a married father of two and youth football coach, was remembered as a devoted family man and dedicated officer.

His coffin, draped in the Union Flag, was carried into a packed church as colleagues and members of the public lined the streets to pay tribute.

PC Tom Clough, 38, was honored at a separate funeral the following day, with hundreds of police officers and military veterans gathering to remember his years of public service.

THE CASE NOW MOVES TO COURT

For Cole’s family, the funeral was meant to be a final opportunity to say goodbye.

Instead, the ceremony became another chapter in a tragedy that has already claimed seven lives and triggered wider concerns about violence and public safety in Middlesbrough.

Gye Worthy has been charged, but the allegations against him have not been proven in court.

He is scheduled to appear at Teesside Magistrates’ Court on October 2.

And as the legal process begins, Cole’s family is left to grieve amid a tragedy that continues to unfold long after the A66 crash itself.
