When Maxim’s parents first learned something was different about their unborn son, they had no idea how long the journey ahead would be.

Maxim and his twin brother Milan were growing well during the pregnancy. But at a routine scan at just 13 weeks, doctors discovered that Maxim’s right femur appeared to be missing.

His mother remembers calmly asking the question that seemed to make the most sense at the time: “But it will grow, right?”

The doctor’s answer — “No” — left the family with thousands of questions.

From that moment, she and Roma began preparing for whatever their son might need. They attended weekly check-ups, ultrasounds, tests and fetal heart monitoring, while meeting panels of doctors, geneticists and specialists.

Eventually, they learned that Maxim’s condition was not caused by a genetic problem. It was a random occurrence — something that could happen to any family.

At 37 weeks, Maxim was born. Then came an unexpected piece of good news: an ultrasound revealed that the femur was actually present, although it was extremely small.

For his parents, even that tiny discovery felt like a reason to hope.

But finding the right path forward was far from easy.

The family consulted some of the leading orthopedic specialists in Moscow, but many could only tell them to wait another year and see whether the leg would grow. They were left without clear answers about rehabilitation, exercises or how their little boy might eventually walk.

Following a recommendation, they traveled to the Albrecht Center in St. Petersburg. There, doctors explained more about prosthetic options and specialized exercises, but the family still felt they needed another solution.

In fact, Maxim’s mother had started researching treatment options even before he was born. Her search eventually led her to renowned surgeon Dr. Dror Paley, who specializes in hip reconstruction, limb deformity correction and limb lengthening.

The decision that followed was not an easy one.

Maxim underwent a rare and highly complex operation in which his leg was repositioned 180 degrees, allowing his heel to eventually function as a knee.

To someone seeing it for the first time, the result may look unusual. But for Maxim’s parents, it represents something much more important: a chance for their son to walk, run and build the future they have always dreamed of for him.

Getting to that operating room was another battle in itself. The family had to raise a huge amount of money, navigate complicated visa arrangements and overcome payment difficulties along the way.

“There were moments when we felt our strength was running out,” his family shared. “But believing in the result gave us the strength to keep going.”

Through every appointment, every uncertainty and every difficult decision, Maxim’s parents never stopped searching for the best opportunity for their son.

Their journey has not been about making Maxim fit into someone else’s idea of normal.

It has been about giving him the freedom to discover his own future — one step, one day and one dream at a time.
