HE WAS ONLY 2 — DAYS AFTER STARTING PRESCHOOL, PETER’S LIFE ENDED IN A HEARTBREAKING COLLISION

Peter Mulcaire was remembered as his family’s “sunshine” and “pride” after the toddler was struck by a jeep while playing on his toy tractor outside his home in Ireland.

A family in Rathkeale, County Limerick, is mourning the devastating loss of 2-year-old Peter Mulcaire, whose life was cut tragically short just days after he began preschool.

Peter was playing on a small toy tractor outside his home in the Abbey Court area shortly before 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 5, when he was struck by a jeep.

The vehicle did not remain at the scene.

Peter suffered catastrophic injuries and was rushed for emergency treatment before being pronounced dead at University Hospital Limerick. Gardaí launched an investigation and appealed for witnesses, CCTV, doorbell footage and dashcam recordings that could help establish what happened.

HE HAD JUST STARTED A NEW ADVENTURE

What makes the tragedy even more heartbreaking is how recently Peter had begun preschool.

His mother, Kerrie Mulcaire, had shared photographs celebrating Peter’s first day of preschool in 2026.

At his funeral Mass at St Mary’s Church in Rathkeale, Fr Eamonn Fitzgibbon recalled how Peter’s older brother, Jim, had walked him into his first preschool class.

It was supposed to be the beginning of a new adventure.

Instead, just days later, his family was preparing to say goodbye.

“SUNSHINE” AND “PRIDE”

Peter’s funeral brought together his heartbroken parents, Kerrie and James, his older brother Jim, baby sister Delilah, relatives, friends and members of the local community.

He was remembered as his family’s “sunshine” and “pride” — a little boy whose smile and personality had left an impression on everyone around him.

School staff formed a guard of honour outside the church as mourners gathered to remember the toddler.

Inside, Peter’s short life was represented through treasured belongings, including items connected to his childhood and the things he loved. His favourite songs were also played during the emotional service.

A BABY SISTER’S SPECIAL MOMENT

One of the most emotional moments came when Peter’s baby sister, Delilah, was christened during the funeral service.

Her christening had originally been planned for later that week.

But her mother chose to hold the ceremony alongside Peter’s funeral so that her little brother could still be part of the milestone.

Delilah wore the same white shawl that her two brothers had worn when they were baptised.

Kerrie later shared a heartbreaking photograph of her baby daughter resting against Peter’s coffin and wrote that she would tell Delilah all about her brother so she would always know how much he loved her.

THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES

A man in his 30s was arrested at another location on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant and was taken to a Garda station to provide an evidential blood or urine sample.

He was subsequently released pending analysis of the sample.

The investigation remains ongoing, and Gardaí have appealed to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or captured relevant footage to come forward.

The tragedy has left the Rathkeale community in profound shock.

Peter’s life lasted just two years.

But at his funeral, the message from those who loved him was clear:

He may have been little — but the place he left in his family’s hearts is enormous.
