THOUSANDS BROKE DOWN IN TEARS AFTER SEEING WHAT PC MATTHEW BLADES’ TWO SONS DID FOR THEIR DAD AT HIS FUNERAL

Among hundreds of police officers, flags and a full ceremonial farewell, one tiny word on the hearse said more than any speech ever could: “DAD.”

There were hundreds of police officers lining the streets of Hartlepool.

There were flags representing police forces from across the United Kingdom.

There were mounted officers, pipers, a ceremonial procession and a coffin draped in the Union Flag.

But amid all the grandeur of PC Matthew Blades’ funeral, it was one incredibly simple tribute that left mourners struggling to hold back their tears.

On the roof of the hearse carrying the 37-year-old officer was a white-and-red floral display spelling one word:

“DAD.”

It was a heartbreaking tribute from Matthew’s two young sons, who had lost the father they adored.

A HERO TO HIS COLLEAGUES — DAD TO TWO LITTLE BOYS

PC Blades, a married father of two, was an armed response officer with Cleveland Police.

He was also a husband, a football coach and, above everything else, a father.

His family had previously described him as a devoted dad whose greatest legacy would be the love he gave his children.

His wife, Sarah, said Matthew was her “beloved husband,” “best friend” and “the most devoted father” to their two young boys.

She promised that their children would grow up knowing what an incredible father he was.

And at his funeral, his sons found their own way to say goodbye.

They did not need a long message.

They did not need a speech.

They simply put “DAD” above the hearse.

THE ENTIRE POLICE COMMUNITY STOOD STILL

Matthew was laid to rest at St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Hartlepool, his hometown, on September 9.

Hundreds of police officers lined Hutton Avenue as the funeral procession made its way toward the church.

Standard bearers represented police forces from across the UK, while officers stood shoulder-to-shoulder to honor one of their own.

Four pipers and a drummer played “Amazing Grace” as the coffin arrived.

Mounted officers stood guard near the church.

And among the sea of uniforms, one detail made the enormous ceremony suddenly feel intensely personal:

DAD.

HE SHOULD HAVE COME HOME THAT NIGHT

Matthew and fellow Cleveland Police officer PC Tom Clough, 38, died in the early hours of August 22 after their marked armed-response vehicle was involved in a head-on collision with a Volkswagen Passat on the A66 near South Bank, Middlesbrough.

Five young men in the Passat also died.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct is investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.

For Matthew’s colleagues, he was a brave officer who died while serving.

For his wife, he was the love of her life.

But for his two sons, he was simply Dad.

“FOREVER OUR SUPERHERO”

After Matthew’s death, his wife issued a deeply emotional tribute.

She described him as someone who was loved beyond words and said his loss had left a space that could never be filled.

Her final words captured what the floral tribute on the hearse could never fully express:

“Forever loved. Forever missed. Forever our superhero. Our Matt and Dad.”

And as his coffin was carried into the church, the word chosen by his sons remained above him.

Not his rank.

Not his collar number.

Not “hero.”

Just:

DAD.

A single word from two children who had lost the person who should have been there to watch them grow up.

And perhaps that was the most powerful farewell of all.
