TASIA FORTUNE CASE TAKES A MAJOR TURN — MAN ARRESTED AFTER HER DEATH IS RULED A HOMICIDE

A 51-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the death of Tasia Fortune, a 29-year-old mother of four who was found hanging from a tree behind a vacant property in Mississippi.

The investigation into the death of Tasia Fortune has taken a major turn after police arrested a man just one day after state medical examiners officially ruled her death a homicide.

Fortune, 29, was found in a hanging position behind a vacant home in Jackson, Mississippi, on August 3, 2026.

For weeks, her family and members of the community had been demanding answers about what happened.

Now, police have made their first arrest.

51-YEAR-OLD MAN ARRESTED

Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney announced Friday that investigators had arrested Jarques Ratliff, 51, in connection with Fortune’s death.

Police had obtained search warrants and an arrest warrant after the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office officially classified Fortune’s death as a homicide on Thursday evening.

Investigators then moved quickly.

According to police, officers executed the search warrants but did not initially find Ratliff at the location.

He was later spotted walking along Capitol Street and taken into custody without incident.

CBS News reported that Ratliff was arrested on a murder charge.

POLICE SAY THE TWO KNEW EACH OTHER

One of the most important details revealed by investigators is that Ratliff had an “association” with Fortune.

However, police have not disclosed the nature of that relationship.

They have also not publicly identified a motive.

Chief Brackney stressed that investigators are continuing to gather evidence and said the arrest should not be viewed as the conclusion of the case.

“This is not closure,” the chief said, describing the arrest as an important step in the investigation.

Police said investigators have spent hundreds of hours working on the case and have interviewed nearly 15 people.

HER DEATH HAD DRAWN NATIONAL ATTENTION

Fortune’s death attracted widespread attention because of the circumstances in which her body was discovered and Mississippi’s painful history of racial violence.

Her body was found hanging from a tree behind a vacant property in Jackson, leading to widespread public questions about whether she had been killed.

For Fortune’s family, the arrest brought a mixture of relief and shock.

Spivey said she broke down in tears after police informed her that an arrest had been made.

But the family still does not know exactly what happened to Tasia.

Spivey said authorities had not told her the motive or whether DNA evidence played a role in identifying Ratliff.

Fortune was a mother of four, and her death has left relatives seeking answers while investigators continue to build their case.
