A family is facing a nightmare after a small private aircraft carrying four relatives disappeared while flying from the Bahamas toward Florida.

On board were experienced pilot Mario Lamar, 80, his wife Lili Lamar, 79, and their grandchildren, Sofia Sosa, 28, and Christian Sosa, 22.

The family had spent the Labor Day weekend at Great Harbour Cay and was heading home to Florida.

Their destination was Miami Executive Airport.

But they never made it.

During the flight, air traffic controllers lost contact with the aircraft approximately 13 miles west of Andros Island.

Then came an alarming development.

Reported tracking data indicated that the plane dropped rapidly from around 10,000 feet to approximately 3,700 feet in just three minutes before disappearing from radar.

Authorities believe the aircraft may have crashed somewhere in the waters near Red Bays, in northern Andros.

But so far, the family has not been found.

Bad weather initially made the search extremely difficult, slowing efforts to locate the missing aircraft.

As the hours passed, the search expanded — and the U.S. Navy joined Bahamian authorities in the operation.

For the family waiting at home, every passing hour has brought more fear but also one thing they refuse to surrender:

hope.

Mario’s family describes him as an experienced pilot with more than 40 years of flying experience.

That makes the sudden disappearance even more difficult for those who know him.
